1293924 2012-08-10 12:33:00 My main grief with the 858 was the touch screen, might as well have been one of the ones that works on pressure. icow (15313)
1293925 2012-08-11 02:48:00 So the 858 and the U8150 are crap. What else is there that will do the job? QW. (15883)
1293926 2012-08-11 03:00:00 Just keep in mind that no matter what you buy in that range, it's never going to be the same as spending $1K on an iPhone 4S, or something like the quad-core 1.5Ghz HTC One X.... So long as you realize that, you'll be fine, a lot in the $250 range are quite decent these days :)

icow, that's the 845 which was a resistive touch screen. The 858 is capacitive, much better. See here: www.knowyourmobile.com

Well, if you re willing to spend $250, a huawei g300 can be had on a sale. 4 inch 800x480 screen, 1ghz processor, 5pm camera with flash. All in all, very impressive. Also, the lumia 701 is on sale at Noel Leemings at the moment for $200, save $180.

Yeah I had a mate who was similar. He went out and bought the original Galaxy S (Not even the Galaxy S2). He was a bit upset because he would look at his mates iPhone 4S (He got his just before the 4S came out) and complain about the speed / camera etc... The Camera was way nicer, the OS was smoother and faster.
What he failed to realize was that at the time he was on a real budget and could only afford a phone which cost around 1/4 the price iPhone 4S. He got frustrated with it, comparing his all the time to the 4S, so he sold his and went out and spent $1K and bought a 4S.

He comes over to show me and says "Man this phone is so much faster, the camera is way nicer, it's great! The Galaxy S was so slow by comparison, I don't know why I even got it!", then I reminded him that he's just spent 4x the value of the Galaxy S on his iPhone 4S, and he didn't have $1K to spend the 6 -> 9 months earlier. He still doesn't understand that when you're spending 4x as much on a phone, you're gonna get something better...

1293930 2012-08-11 05:53:00 With budget droid phones you get budget performance. It's not that bad though. With the hardware screen is by far the biggest, choose one that looks good, then processor/camera. Don't get caught up with bigger better processors though. Anything around 1GHz will suffice easily. even my 600MHz one was fine on my old Galaxy 5.

My advice, find a model that looks good, and is priced right, then check around for support with XDA/Custom ROM's if you feel comfortable flashing them, they will provide FAR better android experiences over what is on your phone with lots of bug fixes, performance tweaks etc.

Eg the Galaxy 5 (i5500T as it's sold as in NZ) has great support from Madteam (www.madteam.co) with an ICS ROM being released. noted, ICS is too laggy to use properly as it's too resource intensive. Their last stable build was 2.3.3 which is Gingerbread and ran an absolute dream.

Other than that you could look on eBay for 2nd hand higher spec phones. After all, a new phone only comes with no scratches and my philosophy is why pay 1K for a phone? Really it's too much. 2nd hand is geat! I say eBay over trademe as the NZ prices are very high since our market pushes prices up.

1293931 2012-08-11 06:44:00 My mate put AOSP on is i9000 and its so smooth! So if you can get the s1 get it and install a custom rom or launcher at the least. sahilcc7 (15483)
1293932 2012-08-11 09:54:00 I have found a couple of touch screen phones without Android. The vodafone 455, and LG T310. QW. (15883)
