1294238 2012-08-14 08:45:00 Unlikely as our weather system is quite complex at higher levels, influences of the wind by terrain more likely. I was speaking with someone at GNS today about these claims and they said is was also unlikely given current weather and output levels locally. Not far outside Napier is a large Fertiliser plant and mounds of sulphur used in fertiliser production. He said that is the most likely source of the odour smelt in the Hawkes Bay. People are just becoming more aware of the odour. coldfront (15814)
1294239 2012-08-14 09:47:00 Actually the sulphur at the fertilizer works is stored under cover and also they are shut down for maintainance. I bike pass there 3 or 4 times a week and have never smelt any sulphur so there goes that theory, so I will still stick to my theory that the smell came from Tongariro.

1294240 2012-08-14 10:25:00 And as I already have mentioned it was also strongly smelt in Hastings on Monday morning.

1294241 2012-08-14 21:00:00 Still find that a bit hard to believe given that I am within 30 kms of Tongariro and the smell is nothing abnormal to other smells coming from Ruapehu and other thermal activity in the area. You would expect it to be extermly strong smelling nearer the source even the gas detection equipment is not showing this up. Maybe you should contact GNS or your local council and ask for them to monitor this for you or ask them if they have any higher readings? coldfront (15814)
1294242 2012-08-14 21:57:00 No not really bothered.

1294243 2012-08-15 01:31:00 Our predominant wind in NZ is a westerly and I would imagine that as the steam drifted higher it would get caught in the westerly wind and get blown to the east.
:)

It is more complex than that, if it blowing east at a higher altitude your not going to smell it as it would be disapated by the wind. There are several sources of Hydrogen Sulphide gas and another is also a by product of vehicle emissions.

Record you dates and times of the smell of sulphur and compare it to the weather at the time. Certainly contact GNS they will be interested in this accurate data.

1294244 2012-08-15 04:46:00 I'm pretty will conversed in the weather conditions in NZ having been involved in aviation a few years ago paticularly gliding were you had to know alot about weather conditions etc. I have numerous books here on NZ weather conditions. The wind very seldom blows east at higher altitudes maybe once a year if ever.

1294246 2012-08-15 05:48:00 Yep NZ's weather is quite complex even though the predominant weather flow is SW but since the eruption we have had a mix(even had a sulphur smell from White Island this morning with slight Easterly)

Had the gliding addiction as well for about 28 years and weather for any area in NZ is very complex due to being a narrow Country and influenced from both Coasts

1294247 2012-08-15 10:39:00 I went to a meeting this afternoon about the Eruption today. What struck me was how the Tourism Industry leaders were mostly Taupo based along with thier MP. Yet Tongariro sits literally on the boundary between Ruapehu and Taupo Districts, involving another MPs area and another Council District. For me that side of the meeting was a bit onesided focusing on Taupo Tourism which will suffer a hell of a lot less than Ruapehu District, which in summer is heavily reliant on the Tongariro Crossing.

IF and the the big question was IF the mount should erupt in a larger way that will be a death nail for a lot of operators in Ruapehu District who can not survive on just winter ski trade. The evacuation plans they talked about were already well known to the locals who live under the base of Tongariro. But it all depends on the scale of Eruption, historically eruptions from Te Mari area are not that big unlike Ruapehus 1995/1996 eruptions. Frankly the media spin is more of the Chicken Little fairy tale of the sky falling in that the reality.

Its quite amazing the amount of damage control that has been done because of fear and panic generated by the media interpretation of the information given out. You really need to look in detail rather than a 10 second sound bite from a TV news room and journo looking for a story.
