1294157 2012-08-11 23:05:00 Installed a Metro Rad Woodburner for the beginning of this winter and have been burning pine and bluegum. Pine seems to burn fast although does produce a good heat. Bluegum lasts longer with no appreciable difference in heat output, but dearer. What is the best (heat output/economically) wood to buy for woodburners ? smurf (6545)
1294158 2012-08-11 23:23:00 There was a Fair Go episode aired on the best wood to burn depending on the desired heat output:

tvnz.co.nz

Hope that helps.

Cheers :)

1294159 2012-08-11 23:39:00 All woods have the same calorific value per unit of mass so denser woods will burn longer with the same heat output. Whenu (9358)
1294160 2012-08-11 23:42:00 Thanks Renmoo...saw that programme..which essentially tells us all what we already know....wet wood doesn't burn lol:) smurf (6545)
1294161 2012-08-11 23:48:00 having had my wife work at the place that does all the independent testing of fires for the whole country and all manufacturers, the conclusions are for all next gen fires like yours a mixture of pine and hardwoods is by far the best so stick with what you are burning gary67 (56)
1294162 2012-08-12 00:06:00 Thanks Gary...that is good to know. Best of luck with your relocation to Ch-Ch and all the best with your new job :) smurf (6545)

1294164 2012-08-12 01:00:00 Looks like I will have to upgrade to a new fire or heatpump in a couple of years. I was reading in the Southland Express that the council are thinking of outlawing older multi-fuel burners just like CHCH did.

How was the fire ban enforced in CHCH? I would like to get a heatpump, but still keep my fire in operational order just in case I ever need it. I've got a huge back yard, so don't really need to worry about the space my firewood shelter takes up.

1294166 2012-08-12 23:56:00 Cheapest firewood is old pallets! They are given away free, so we collect them in summer when nobody else wants them, and they are dry, then cut them up into usable pieces with a chainsaw (avoiding all nails). You mainly get softwood, but there a reasonable number of hardwood pallets about. It doesn't much matter anyway, you can burn as much as you like because it is all free.

We have not paid for firewood in many years. From time to time I pull the nails out of the (cold) ashes using a few old ferrite speaker magnets inside a plastic bag and they go off in the recyle bin.

Cheers
