94451 2002-10-30 01:47:00 For a start you would need a server with a fast frame-relay connection (or similar) for storing things like emails, and then you just rent modems of telecom's datacenter for customers to dial in to.

94452 2002-10-30 02:00:00 so thats looking at big bucks to set up a ISP.. csinclair83 (200)
94453 2002-10-30 02:03:00 Yep.

My friend setup a wireless isp and it cost him $200,000. But that was mainly devalopment costs, it would be cheaper if you just setup a normal isp and rented the modems off telecom.

94454 2002-10-30 02:29:00 I had a long time ago that Paradise.net's initial investment was only around $30k crozier (2004)
94455 2002-10-30 02:34:00 This bring me to a question Ive been meaning to ask for ages...
Where do THEY dial into??
How does that all work, in a sense, couldnt I be my own ISP?
How does that sort of thing work (In REAL lay-man terms please....!?)

Thanks

94456 2002-10-30 02:40:00 If the number you dial is 087 then you get put through to one of telecoms datacenters (where you isp rents modems, or something like that), form there you connect to the web (i think).

94458 2002-10-30 03:45:00 They don't "dial" in. They get an optical fibre, or other fast interface to a computer, and they PAY MONEY (data volume/speed based) to connect that to a gateway to the Internet backbone. There will be another fairly fat line to Telecom's data network, which will multiplex all the online users (this replaces a "lot" of phone lines to a bank of modems in the ISP's machine room).
