94375 2002-10-29 23:50:00 I am not a computer professional but as I have been messing with computers extensivly since the TRS-80 days, I have gained a lot of experience and I frequently get called on to sort out problems for friends and organisations .

Recently I have come across 3 computers with similar problems that I have been unable to resolve .

I will detail the most recent two of these in the hope that somebody may know an answer .

No 1 . (WIN98SE) A computer with on board AC-97 sound that had no audio . I checked the sound drivers and they had gone so I found the MB type and DL the drivers and they installed 100% .

Checked the devices in the control panel and they showed no errors but still no sound . I removed and reinstalled the drivers in various ways but always the same problem . In the end I had to give up but I did hear that (at some cost) a computer company managed to sort it but I dont know how .

No 2 . (WIN98SE) A MB died so I obtained and installed a new MB and CPU . Started in Safe mode, removed the ENUM key from the registry and rebooted . Normal install involving numerous reboots and installation of various drivers until all 100% EXCEPT the sound which exhibited the same problem . The MB uses a VIA chipset and the 4 in 1 drivers were installed . It used the AC-97 onboard chipset .

Again I checked SYSTEM and devices in the Control Panel and found the sound section looked 100% Then under sound if I tick a sound I find that the play button was grayed out . I made enquiries with various collegues in the profession and one pointed out something but was still unable to help with a cure .

Under Multimedia on my system I find that both Playback and recording devices are listed as SB LIVE OUT (D800) and SB LIVE IN (D800) plus other options . The SB live is my sound card .

On the No 2 system, they only had 2 options . "Game Compatable Device" and "Voice Modem wave"

This has to be the problem but what is the cure . Has anyone ever had this and found an answer .

94376 2002-10-30 09:44:00 It may be worth checking the bios settings, as it is possible to disable the onboard sound through there and it should also be possible to enable emulation for soundblaster at the very least. Gorela (901)
94377 2002-10-30 09:50:00 The AC97 is a codec, not a chipset.
Its likely the boards you saw used differing chipsets, so more likely to be coincidence?
