| 94568 | 2002-11-17 08:08:00 | My 2c worth... Get Mandrake 8.2 (trademe.co.nz is a good cheap source of Linux distributions - $12 or so). As others have said, 64MB of ram is a bit low for running XWindows (but it will run) another 64MB would be ideal. 1.5GB should be ok for a development only type environment (just be selective on what you install). When you install Linux you have to specify the root (superuser) password and create a normal user also. The students would be normal users. Most system admin type functions can only be done with by root (you??). Depending on what language you do your programme training in, you could get Borland Kylix 3 Open Edition (Magazines cd's are a good source - and free) which hosts a C++ or Pascal compiler). |

As the older versions have lower sys requirements. Though the newer versions like Mandrake 9.0 would be alright as long as you don't use KDE3 or Gnome2 and instead use the lighter WM like that comes with it. | Falcdragon (919) | ||
