New Vulpine GLMark Patch: 1.103 For NV30 Support
GLmark 2001 is a benchmarking program that is intended to test the performance and visual quality delivered by modern 3D accelerators in a „real world“ setting. It is important to point out that GLmark is based entirely on the OpenGL graphics API. Given the fact that both performance and compatibility of many graphics cards´ OpenGL drivers differ significantly from their Direct3D counterparts, we consider it necessary to determine OpenGL and Direct3D performance independently from one another.
The new patch adds Nvidia NV30 support by allowing Extension Strings longer than 2048 Bytes (required for NV30 compatibility).
Probably not a big deal, but anyway.

innovative New CPU Cooling Unit
Active Cool, located in Ashkelon, Israel, develops solid-state high-power cooling solutions for PC processors and other semiconductors. Active Cool has developed the world's first solid-state power cooling solution for PC processors, AC4G. AC4G can be installed in any PC in less than 90 seconds. AC4G's patent-pending new approach to processor cooling is poised to a new generation of generic PC cooling solutions.
AC4G is an entirely new approach to cooling PC processors that is poised to replace the standard heat sink and fan technology in PCs with fast processors.
Features:
Solid-state power cooling
Cools Pentium 4 up to 4 GHz
Cools AMD's K7 and new K8 processors
Dramatically reduces computer noise
In typical use, lowers processor temperature to 26°C
Installs in any PC in less than 90 seconds
While conventional air coolers cannot lower temperatures below that of the (warm) air inside the computer case, Active Cool’s solid-state thermo-electric heat pump cools processors to 26 degrees Celsius when running typical office applications, allowing tolerance for hot spots while preventing condensation. Active Cool’s AC4G solution reduces PC case and CPU fan noise by running fans at slow speeds under normal operation, only operating fans at full speed when the CPU is stressed. AC4G’s heat pump continues to provide cooling power, even when fans are operating at slow speed, which is impossible to do with conventional cooling methods. Active Cool’s AC4G does not require hardware modification or software and can be installed quickly and easily into any PC during assembly. The AC4G is powered independently from the PC.
Early customers of Active Cool’s AC4G product include Thermal Take, GlobalWin, Titan and ADDA, all of whom have successfully tested the product.

Logitech Z-680 5.1 Speaker System Review (www.extremetech.com)
ExtremeTech is at it again and tool Logitech's first ever 5.1 system to the test. And according to the test ExtremeTech claims it is the best 5.1 system ever. They may be technically but personally I prefer a more distinguished design...
hese features include a beefed up 450-watt amplifier, a decoder to handle DTS, Dolby Digital and ProLogic II, a line-level input jack for your DiscMan or MP3 player, and a headphone jack for those late-night gaming or movie sessions. Also new is a wireless IR remote that allows the tweaking of center, subwoofer and surround channel volume levels, overall volume level, a mute toggle, an effect selector, an input selector, and a test button that sequentially outputs pink noise through the five satellites to verify correct speaker configuration.

VIA And SiS November Chipset Releases
Chipset designers VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) are both planning to launch several new products next month, hoping to keep the high-season business momentum going after mid-November with more appealing product specifications.
For Intel’s Pentium 4 platform, VIA is expected to introduce its new dual-channel DDR-supporting P4X600 discrete chipset as well as two more integrated chipsets, the P4M266A and P4M400. Incorporating the company’s more advanced “Castle Rock” graphics core, the P4M400 will primarily target the medium-range to high-end market.
SiS recently informed clients that it will start releasing its dual-channel DDR product, the SiS655, in November as well. Based on the dual- channel DDR333 standard, the SiS655 is not only able to support dual memory modules, but also allows users to mix modules of different capacity. Asustek Computer has scheduled to launch a SiS655-based motherboard, the P4SDX, next month, featuring Serial ATA and AGP 8x support.
As for the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) segment, the two companies also have plans to roll out new chipsets, especially as the life of current K7-platform products has been extended by AMD’s delayed launch of its next-generation K8 processors. However, given that their current KT400 and SiS746 chipsets already feature rather advanced specifications, VIA and SiS are mulling over a proper launch time for their new KT400A and SiS746FX, respectively, to avoid consumers postponing purchases as they wait for newer products.

DirectX 8.2 = DirectPlay 8.2 Final
Seems that some sites have got hold of the final build of DirectPlay 8.2 Final that will update your DirectX 8.1b to DirectX 8.2. This update was meant for Peeps that got MS Combat Flight Simulator 3 or New World Order!
We have found that Microsoft's DirectX8.1 will create a massive lag. To solve this problem Microsoft has created especially for New World Order and MS Combat Flight Simulator 3 a DirectX 8.1 patch (DirectPlay 8.2). The DirectPlay 8.2 beta patch is set to expire on October 31, 2002 . However, the final release of the DirectPlay 8.2 patch will be available prior to this expiration date allowing plenty of time to upgrade the beta to the final release. DirectX 9 will also contain this patch.
Please note: This release is neither time-bombed nor is it a beta! This can be considered a minor release as only the DirectPlay-API has been updated.

RealNetworks Releases Source Code
SEATTLE (AP) - Microsoft Corp. has billions of dollars working to its advantage, but crosstown rival RealNetworks is hoping to line up the rest of the world on its side.
RealNetworks on Tuesday released most of the secret blueprints, or "source code," to its software that allows computer users to play audio and video over the Internet. It planned to similarly release the source code for its server and encoding software in December.
By sharing the code with thousands of developers, the company believes it can more quickly and more effectively spread adoption of its software - tailored for scores of different computers, wireless phones and handheld devices.
Still, the Seattle-based company is keeping other parts of its source code secret, including the blueprints for such features as burning compact discs.

Office 11 Shuns Windows 9x, Me
Beta coordinators for Office 11 revealed late Monday that Microsoft's next generation Office suite will require Windows 2000 SP3 or Windows XP. Microsoft cited security and stability as reasons to cease supporting the Windows 9x kernel.
"We understand that this decision won't be popular among all of our customers, but it allows us to create a better and more stable product," read a message posted to the Office 11 beta newsgroup.
"There were a number of reasons for removing support for Windows 9x. As a number of you have noted, Windows 98 and 98 SE are getting a bit old now. It also relates heavily to the push to improve security in our products. Windows 9x is inherently insecure. It also takes quite a bit of dev time to make our products work well on Windows 9x. We determined that it would be more effective to spend that time making our products work better on the more advanced platforms."
Because Office 11 requires Windows Installer 2.0, Windows 2000 users must install Service Pack 3 or higher. "Installer 2.0 is much better about limiting reboots at install time and when applying patches. It also has features that allow us to minimize the need for the user to insert the CD. Lastly, Installer 2.0 allows us to optimize the patches so that the size of the patch is much smaller," said beta coordinators.

We are the worst security risk!
Thanks to Jinx for writing this up in the forums.
The Reg and Security Focus tell us the following.
"More than half of all senior IT managers (58 per cent) think that their own IT departments offer the largest threat to IT security...Further questioning revealed that 67 per cent of senior IT security managers felt that their IT departments lacked the requisite skills to handle the widening spectrum of security threats that exist today. Two thirds also believed their employees to be a major threat to corporate IT security. By contrast, only 10 per cent quizzed during the poll identified malicious hackers as the largest threat to security."

Australians log off the web
Internet use in Australia, one of the most connected countries in the world, has fallen for the first time accompanied by a warning that demand might have levelled.
Market research firm Market Intelligence Strategy Centre's (MISC) index of internet usage fell three percent in the quarter ending June. It was the first fall since the Internet Uptake Index was created in 1999.
Australia, with a population of about 20 million people, has about 70% penetration level despite problems with the roll-out of broadband. The country has long been used as a testing ground for new technology by Japanese and US companies.
