94897 2002-10-31 20:05:00 After being desperately frustrated this week by my daughter downloading, installing then uninstalling utter junk on my computer and causing problems I'm looking forward to Win XP . I like the sound of Win XP's security features in that I will be able to be the Boss of the PC with the Computer Administrator account .

From what I can gather I understand that I will be able to prevent other users from fiddling with system settings, etc but what I'd like to know is can I prevent them from downloading and/or installing stuff?

I hate people fiddling with my computer so I want my new PC locked up as tight as I can .

94898 2002-10-31 20:18:00 Ooooh, I'm glad you're not my mother :D

I'm not sure if you can stop people from downloading stuff (it wouldn't surprise me if you could stop it), but you can certainly stop the downloaded things from installing, which really defeats the purpose of downloading in the first place, doesn't it :)

I don't have my XP locked up tight - never needed to, but I do know that you can lock it up so tight that nothing can be run on it if you don't want it to :D

94899 2002-10-31 20:18:00 It is not possible to stop downloads unless access to selected sites is restricted .

A solution is to create a user profile from new with restricted/limited permissions and change it to a mandatory profile .

Mandatory profiles permit session changes but not permanent changes . Search the MS kb for further information .

The best solution is to provide a separate machine either networked or standalone . . . .

Good advise Merlin, but kids being kids, the old computer will be completely useless compared to the new one!

Depending on the operating system any speed machine can be used. it is only when using - or attempting to use - the latest operating system that system specifications rise dramatically (and also cost).

Peripheral devices are not necessarily a requirement given the limited time required to learn how to use them.

New - in relation to the hardware - may be good but not necessarily essential.
New - in the way of operating system software - may not necessarily be best.

94902 2002-10-31 21:50:00 Susan B,

When you get your WinXP system I can recommend a REALLY good forum for helpful advice etc. Some very good people on it ... can't think of their names off the top of my head (I think some of them hide behind some really weird aliases - don't know why!). Hmmm I thinks its called de presse f1

By the way how's the cat?

94903 2002-10-31 22:25:00 If you want to restrict your kids from downloading from a(the) site(s) is to put password everytime they open a new site(s).

About installing a programme, the best way is to enable the antivirus(in the sence that this program is from the net).

Hi Merlin,

I think Susan's probably getting prepared for her new computer. Kids being kids, they probably won't want to use the "older" one

94905 2002-10-31 23:15:00 Susan - you can stop programs being installed easy enough. So, as long as you have a flat rate internet account, they can download to their hearts content, but will not be able to install anything they download, so no prob.

94906 2002-10-31 23:21:00 The easiest solution is to give the family the new one and stick to the old! For some unknown reason the kids are completely disinterestd in a 386, 486 or early pentium .

Games tend to need higher specs than this machine so the solution was to buy my husband a later model and ban all games from this one . My celeron limps a little bit at times but at least I have it to myself .
