94675 2002-10-30 20:59:00 Help me i have win XP pro and when i try to go in to Start/Help and support, it comes up with an error message saying it cant find the file "helpctr.exe". I actually found helpctr.exe somewhere on my hard drive, but i dont know wherer its proper location is. Does anyone else know?
The same thing also happens when i go Start/Run/msconfig it says it cant find that either. BUT, i also found the msconfig file in the same folder as the helpctr.exe was in. I think it was in D:/Windows/PChealth/ or something.
Any help would be appreciated greatly.
Thanks
SHREK

Did you originally install Windows to D: drive, or have you moved it over, or what?

On my machine they're found at:

C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries

So if you installed to D: then they're in the right place, and there's something telling XP that they should be somewhere else. If, however, you've moved Windows (or part of it) to D: then this will be why.

94677 2002-10-30 21:48:00 No i installed XP on D:\ originally and i havent moved anything.
Yes the helctr was in the binaries folder so it is obviously in the right place.
So what could be wrong???

94678 2002-10-30 22:06:00 First double click on the hlpctr.exe icon to see if it runs. if it does, then you need to check whether the registry is pointing to the right location.

Open regedit Start>Run>regedit, or find it in C:\Windows\System32\regedit32.exe

Then navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\HELPCTR.EXE

Check that the default value is pointing to the correct path. If it isn't, change it to the correct one. (Backup your registry first).

Do the same for msconfig.

Let me know how you get on.

94680 2002-10-30 23:55:00 Don't know, but that is the place to start. If it doesn't work, I'll think of something else.

94681 2002-10-31 03:51:00 No luck. The helpctr works, but, well, get this: Those two reg keys you were talking about? THEY ARENT THERE!!!
How bizzare is that?
Im gonna boot in to safe mode then do a virus scan.

94683 2002-10-31 05:22:00 javoyle, Adding to GP's comments...
Cut and past (EXACTLY as I've posted here) the following higlighted section into a file and name it HELPCTR.REG and save it to your harddrive in D:\. Then from explorer find thae file just created, D:\HELPCTR.REG and double-click on it when prompted to add the information click YES. This registry file will update the pointers for HELPCTR and may also allow MSCONGIG (which is in the same directory) to function. If not post back here. Cheers, Babe.

94684 2002-10-31 05:44:00 DO NOT DO WHAT BABE SAYS!!!

Babe is correct, except the forum has inserted spaces into his post where they shouldn't be. This could screw your registry. Babe has the correct keys, etc, but I have copied and pasted the keys into a file called helpctr.reg for you to download here (knightguider.orcon.net.nz)

As usual, backup your registry first in case I have missed one of the mistakes.

Sorry Babe, wasn't your fault of course.
