94626 2002-10-30 09:24:00 I'm looking for a good, reliable, quiet but inexpensive hard disk drive. Disk capacity: 30 - 40 G.

I'm currently using a 17 G Seagate 5400 rpm drive. It is pretty good but I find it a bit too noisy. My friend's machine is using a 30 G Maxtor, 5400 rpm which is pretty quiet. His machine is just over a week old, therefore, we don't know how reliable it is.

Recommendations, please.

Cheers

94627 2002-10-30 09:37:00 Hi bk T, "inexpensive" is one of those funny words like "reasonable". It varies from person to person. How much do you want to spend.

Personally I have a Seagate Barracude 7200 drive. Installed for well over a year with no problems, and it's pretty quiet. It's worth bearing in mind that drive noise can often be lowered by tightening the screws which hold it in place in the case housing.

I use a Seagate barracuda 7200 40gb and it's virtually silent - you have to put your head right up to the computer case to hear it, so I'd say it's pretty quiet :) my other drive is a Quantum 20gb and boy is that noisy :p

94629 2002-10-30 09:54:00 I have Seagate 7200 40 GB, 5400 40 GB and Maxtor 5400 40 GB, and seagate is the quietest, but not by much.

Had a Quantum 15 GB die (2 years) and a Maxtor 40 GB die (3 months) rest are OK.

Even the Maxtor is barely audible, the PSU and AGP fans make more noise.
