94907 2002-10-31 23:41:00 Thanks guys, you lot are priceless . I can always rely on coming here for a good cheer-up . :-)

Mike: Ooooh, I'm glad I'm not your mother - you would drive me absolutely bonkers! :D

Nah, seriously, if the kids would fix their own mishaps and problems it wouldn't be so bad but it's always me who has to clean up the mess . Any suggestion that they learn the mysteries of the computer is met with total horror and "Hell no! No way do I want to be a geek like you!!" (which, by the way, is the ultimate compliment to me :D) . So until they're prepared to do more than just use it and start fixing up their own messes then I'll lock my machine up so they don't destroy my stuff and lock me out .

Merlin: Once I've got my new PC up and running and transferred all my stuff onto it the kids can have this machine . With a bit of luck they will soon learn that I won't have time to maintain it like I do now so hopefully they will either be careful what they do or learn how to fix what they do . Just as long as they don't stuff up my new one!!

Baldy: LOL you've hit the nail right on the head! :D

Babe: Do you have a link to the really good forum you mentioned? It sounds wonderful . I don't care what people call themselves, as long as they have good answers and can make me larf . ;-)

> By the way how's the cat?
The Cat has had a terrible scowl on her face and was hissing and spitting something dreadful everytime someone got too close so wasn't such good company recently . She's much better now though, thanks .

Oh, you mean Kitty? Well, poor kitty needs a bit of stuffing sewn back in after getting a good kick down the hall . She doesn't mind tho as she's got a good surgeon and knows just how important she really is . :D

Heather!!! :O :O *rushes to put hand over Heather's mouth before kids hear*
Ho, no way are they getting my new PC all to themselves!!! That's my new baby, required to replace the semi-empty nests in this house . I'm prepared to share, but ONLY if they keep their grubby little mitts out of installation and system files .

Thanks Graham and shockwave, I'm really pleased to hear that I will be able to stop programs being installed . That will be sufficient . :-)

:8} er, how did this turn into a novel? :8}

94909 2002-11-01 00:33:00 Susan, with my lot I've found that if they screw it up I just format c: and reinstall windows and leave the rest to them, without backing up their data. Sounds harsh, but it does take only one experience of that to make them learn. :) antmannz (28)
94910 2002-11-01 00:57:00 This sound like an ideal scenario for dual booting. If you hid each OS from the other and let the kids have there own they can't mess your stuff up. If you backup their installation with something like Ghost (hope you asked for that as your F1 prize ;) ) you can then reinstall withing minutes of a catastrophe. crozier (2004)
94911 2002-11-01 01:35:00 If you have NTFS, You can use Disk Management, or, in otherwords, let them install all their games first that they'll want.. Like the latest CS, and stuff, Update it and all. Then, set them a limit of say 100 Megs on their personal disk space usage, so while they'll be able to download and stuff, there will be a limit on what can actually be kept on there.

If you dont have NTFS, The only way to convert is a format I think.

Cheers

94912 2002-11-01 01:37:00 With WinXP you can upgrade to NTFS crozier (2004)
94913 2002-11-01 01:44:00 Man, They should have added that feature to Win2K... I've got a HUGE format coming up coz I want NTFS... Wish I could somehow change the File system.

Is there a 3rd party tool to do it??

94914 2002-11-01 01:48:00 I'm pretty sure that Partition Magic will do it... I think... maybe..... well.... I'm sure it will.... crozier (2004)
94915 2002-11-01 02:01:00 Hmmmm, more food for thought - some really good suggestions here. :-)

This is going to be a brand new machine with a brand new whopping 80gig hard drive (current one is 6GB) and brand new installation of Win XP so it's going to be fun planning that side of it.

Downloading stuff doesn't worry me too much, although I like the idea of setting a limit on their personal disk space in case they get too carried away. Mainly though, it's installing downloaded and other programs that I want to control. I'm definitely keeping my data on it's own partition away from them so it will be nice and easy if I need to do as antmannz suggests. ]:)

94916 2002-11-01 02:11:00 Hey, this stuff ain't new. Way back my brother-in-law partitioned his 486 so the kids had a partition each. They had enough space to store zip files of their programs and run one program at a time. When they had had enough of "Jill of the Jungle" it needed to be re-zipped so another program could be unzipped and loaded.

That worked in the days before programs installed to the registry and dumped system files in Windows.... but the idea is there.
