95259 2002-11-01 21:12:00 I'm having trouble with certain games Freesing or crashing for no obvious reason at very irregular times.

The latest game I've been having trouble with is the BattleField 1942 demo from the pc word cd.

Once in a wile it works but 9 times out of 10 it either freezes or I suddenly find myself staring at my desktop again, windows will not respond all I can do Is press the power button and windows shuts down.

I'm running windows 98 on an Atholn xp 1800+ in an ASUS A7A 266-e motherboard with a geforce 4 mx 440 and 384 meg of pc 133 sdram
enough of power for most games

All drivers are the most current versions but still I am having the same problem.

another game I had similar troble with was Duke nukem MH also from a pcworld disk

running out of ideas
I'm open to suggestions

95260 2002-11-01 21:57:00 I've had the same problem!!
if the game freezes at ramdom times and the sound repeats it self when it freezes then follow my instrutions

when i had the problem i was told to replace my motherboard, but i dont think u need to do that! but when i got my mother board replaced the shop guys tweaked my computer so i will never have freezing problems

heres what to do
type 'msconfig' in run then go to start up tab and uncheck all boxes apart from 'systray' and 'explorer' those are esential for running your computer! and u can leave your antivirus checked too.
the reason for this is to stop uneeded programes from starting up when widows starts! heres my idea of what cause the freezing, all those apps running are taking up your system resorse and this can make your computer freeze. so thats why u should close all programs running before playing any games.

now u got most of your system resorse back u should run defrag and scandisk to optimise your computer(remember to close all programs running)
then i think u go to........ right click on my computer/ properties/ and i forgot....... then go to somthing to change your computer from desktop computer to network server, and this doesnt matter if u dont want to network or have a network, all this does is make your computer load files a bit faster!!

i dont forgot where you go to change it but im sure some one willl come along and tell u
and go to my site (www.geocities.com) and look at the optimise computer article,

hoped i helped.........but im only 13 and u probaly no more than me!!

and this timme i didnt copy any thing and ill i said is from personal experiance hahah

cheers--

95261 2002-11-02 00:28:00 Is it freezing so that there is no mouse response or keyboard response? so that only option is to press the restart button?

if so

First off has it ever happened before with your current setup when not playing games? If so try to think of what ever you were doing and tell us.

Now the first thing to do would be to try running the games with the lowest graphics settings possible to see if that has any effect. (I'm guessing it won't because your current system seems capable of doing the job but it's worth a try.)

If that doesn't achieve anything then try disabling the sound and turning your speakers off, play the games and see if it freezes still. (the only reason I suggest that is because I had a problem where the sound card was incompatible with the motherboard.)

Defrag and run scan disk.

95262 2002-11-02 07:38:00 I got battleField to run, I lowerd the video settings to medium as well as running a defrag.

So thats one game running ok

But as for duke

I still can't figure out why that crashes on me.
I have experimented with every setting still no luck
I formated and re installed windows a few weeks back (whole other problem) and as a test i ran duke before installing any other program.
Same result.

I don't really mind that duke doesn't go I just find I strange that a simple game like that cashes.

Anyway thanks for help
