95205 2002-11-01 11:14:00 Hi,

I am running a Duron 1.1G with 256MB on a Gigabyte GA-7VKML board which uses the VIA ProSavageDDR KM266 chipset including integrated graphics. Running Win 98 and PowerDVD XP.

from VIA website:
... Supporting enhanced 128-bit 3D and 2D engines, effective AGP 8X equivalent internal bandwidth throughput through 128-bit data paths, 32MB of Frame Buffer capability and DVD DXVA Motion Compensation for smooth DVD playback....

I have found playback to be slightly jerky eg when camera pans so am considering upgrading to an AGP card. The board supports 2x/4x AGP.

My question is, what specification AGP card would I need in order to get some improvement without having to go over the top with a top range card. I am not a gamer, so gameplay is not an issue - and the review in this month's mag wasn't much help as it didn't mention DVD!

Thanks for any help you can give.

Megan Hieatt. :)

95206 2002-11-01 12:14:00 ProSavage onboard display isn't quite what u really want to use... :) With a Duron 1.1 under Win98 I would say any GeForce 2 with 64MB should do the job as I have seen smooth playback on some machine that are less powerful than yours.

Before you go ahead with any purchase, try to put the DVD on it's own IDE channel, update to the latest DirectX 8.1, update the VIA 4 in 1 pack and see how it goes 1st

95207 2002-11-01 19:34:00 Hi Megan,

First of all, it may not be a problem with your video adapter that causes jerky playback. There could be a number of other things that cause it.

First of all, check that your DVD drive has DMA enabled -
In Windows 98 Right-Click on My Computer on the desktop, and click Properties. In the new window click on the Devices tab, and in the list that displays click on the + next to "CDROM", and double-click on your DVD drive model number from the list under CDROM. In the new window click on the Settings tab, and place a tick in the box next to DMA, then click OK through to close all the windows. You may need to restart to get this to work properly, I'm not sure.

Secondly, have you tried another DVD software player, such as WinDVD? This solved my problem (in fact I switched from WinDVD to PowerDVD) - I'd even bought a new AGP card, just in case this was the problem (it wasn't).

Thirdly, if you're not a gamer, you could possibly make do with a card such as the TNT2, as this should allow smooth playback on your machine, without having the extra expense of buying a more expensive card you won't really make full use of (such as a GeForce) - but check out the price difference first, as it may still be worth buying a GeForce.

HTH

Mike.
