2002-11-02 11:04:00 | I think the point is, floppy, people generally don't take kindly to this kind of blatant advertising on this type of forum. What right have you got to > "encourage other New Zealanders switch their banking to Kiwibank"? And why just NZers, don't you want immigrants to join too? Banking is a personal thing, we all know that kiwibank exists... couldn;t miss it really, but we don't want you slamming it down our throats/ What are you going to do during the next election? Encourage us to "Vote Jimbo"? Wrong place mate.

2002-11-02 11:28:00 | What happened to POSB? Oh that's right, Govt sold it and ANZ got it now. Will the same happen to Kiwibank? How long before that gets sold to overseas? The biggest lemon yet. IUAM. SiK

2002-11-02 17:36:00 | I bought the first issue out of curiosity. As far as I could see it was no different from other one it was trying to push out. Seems IDG failed and I am pleased it did. Too much like the big boys trying to push out the small kids. And when they do up go the prices. Down goes the quality. Pity PC World doesn't get pushed out too. Then we might get an unbiased mag that never says a bad word about it's advertisers. And doesn't fill half it's pages with copies of what has already been published it it's Yankee owners. Jack

2002-11-02 19:48:00 | The new bank is not be involved in the risky corporate financing deals that got the BNZ and DFC into trouble . Instead, the bank will restrict itself to retail banking, at least in its initial phase . But some of the history of the governments involvement in banking is being rewritten by opponents of the bank and needs to be corrected . The Government purchased the BNZ in 1938 because it had failed in private ownership . It operated successfully in public ownership until Roger Douglas allowed it to become involved in very risky corporate ventures in the Wild West financial markets of the 1980s . Even then, after the BNZ was loaned $600 million by the Government, it repaid its loan in full at an interest rate of 15%, when the going commercial lending rate was substantially lower . In other words, the New Zealand taxpayer did not carry the can for a BNZ bailout, as has often been claimed . The bank is profitable under all of the detailed scenarios examined in the business plan prepared by NZ Post . Even the independent advisers Cameron & Co and Price Water House Coopers found that under all reasonable circumstances Kiwibank would be profitable . In one scenario examined by one independent consultant, the bank was forecast to achieve a lower rate of profit than NZ post currently earns however it nevertheless forecast the bank would perform better than break-even . Some opponents of the bank who have previously said the bank would make a loss are now attacking it for being more profitable than existing overseas-owned banks . Of course, a start-up operation will not make a profit in its initial phase . The government expects the bank to be profitable after three years . It will have repaid the Governments cash contribution within seven years (with interest) . It is forecast to have an asset value of $500 million within ten years . It is important to note that the $78 . 2 million comes out of the capital budget for infrastructure investment or debt repayment . It is one off and not the same as spending on essential social services such things as putting more police on the streets, more teachers in the schools or more nurses in hospitals . (I do know my facts and figures)

2002-11-02 23:06:00 | So you're happy a bunch of New Zealanders lost their jobs after Imag closed huh? And you'd be happy to see PCW employees lose their jobs too? Then what local representation would the local IT/PC industry have? Go away Jack....idiot

Jack these are rather sad statements - I have always enjoyed Imag and it was the first pc related mag i brought after buying my computer so I found the imfo invaluable and if it wasn't for Imag i probably wouldn't have found this forum and the knowledge it provides me either!! I will personally miss Imag . I am also a recent convert to P C World and find that an extremely good mag too, and not to mention the fact that IDG provide this FREE forum for us to use . It is really sad indeed to see such negative feedback as yours and as Jar Jar said, not to mention the implications that Imag closing will have on the committed team who worked hard no doubt to provide us with the end product and will now find themselves seeking employment . How could anyone be "pleased" about that!!!!?:| X-( ?:| X-( It is a real shame to loose a N . Z produced mag in my opinion . |
