95106 2002-11-01 10:41:00 I have been with Xtra since I brought my computer.

* No busy signals
* Connect first time, everytime.
* Excellent Help Desk
* Nice steady/fast download speeds on dial-up

I know everyone likes to bag the big companies, but it mystifies me why everyone thinks Telecom is the ogre here.

Whats with the Kiwibank message Floppy?

95107 2002-11-01 11:00:00 I had several problems with Xtra a few years back, and their helpdesk sucked - they seemed to think that everyone was an idiot until they proved otherwise (reminds me of HP). To me that seems the wrong way around.

Anyway, last year I bought a modem which came with a months free internet and no connection fee (with Xtra). So I thought I'd give them another go. They told me that they were experiencing problems (and, if I remember correctly it was Auckland anniversiary weekend) so I gave them 4 days to sort themselves out. At which time I told them to forget it. But theystill tried to bill me for a month even though a) the forst month should have been free, and b) I never even got an account set up, let alone dialed in. So I will never give Xtra another go.

As to why why everyone thinks Telecom is the ogre is he same reason as MS gets the same label... it's called tall opy syndrome.

95110 2002-11-01 19:13:00 We use http://www.slingshot.co.nz
$15.00 per month unlimited, no busy signals, and as quick as anyone else.

95111 2002-11-01 19:27:00 It,s good to see you can get good service from slingshot rmcb.
Most of us have experienced slingshot at sometime, but when something does go wrong you will find that they suck.
Also slingshot is as fast as the rest when its not between the times of 5pm to 10pm. Sure you can connect at 52k but it doesn't mean you can download that fast.

ihug and xtra do generally provide good service, they sound like dumbarses sometimes because they have so many people and so have to make sure everything from the begining is ok (hence why you'd get an automated message telling you to check your init strings etc)

Think of those customer service reps as been us helpers on pressf1. Most of us know to explain the problem clearly to get a good reply. But a newbie doesn't he just says his computers crashed. Those customer reps have to deal with the same thing. Except they aren't able to distinguish between the knowledgeable and the not.
(Sure there are exceptions to this, but you get the guist)

Also in regards to the first reply, of which this topic is about. Have you thought of investigating things at your end?

95112 2002-11-01 20:31:00 I would also steer clear of reasonably small companies; often they can’t afford the same hardware and technology as the big corporate can. Many of the small companies are franchised also of middle sized ISPs.

95114 2002-11-01 21:50:00 Ihug was my ISP for about 5 years, i left them for the telstra-cable package when i decided i wanted better speed than dial up could give.

However a "dial up" ISP i found them very reliable and moved a shipload of data through them while connected 24/7
