95524 2002-11-02 10:50:00 Well I finally did it .

I feel like one of the monkeys that typed a Shakespeare play (eventually) and the process was pretty similar, but I am FINALLY connected through Knoppix, using the Mozilla Browser at the moment.

I won't post what I did, until I am sure it is stable and relatively trouble free, as I have previously managed to logon, for short periods, only to have the whole thing crash. So I'll "play" with it for a while first..

Hey! does posting in Linux look any different? It does from this end!!!! (Linux newbie question)

95525 2002-11-02 11:10:00 Congratulations. Knoppix works really well on recent and common hardware (< 2 years). I thru it in my machine and the auto-detection process worked like a dream.

One thing to realise is that Mozilla can have problems on certain websites so you can't really blame knoppix for that.

No, posting in Linux doesn't look any differently. Text is text is text.
Unix-like systems have been running the web for years...

95526 2002-11-02 23:30:00 Hi Gibler,
Yes I've used Mozilla in Windows and I'm a bit of a fan, though I prefer to use Opera best, even though it is has a few more problems with some Microsoft sites. What I have found with Knoppix is that I seem to have problems with Konqueror crashing the connection. For example when loading a site I scrolled down to see a bit more and Konqueror immediatly stopped loading, refused to reload and eventually (after a bit of playing around on my part) killed the connection seems a bit odd? No trouble with Mozilla though.

In case anyone wants to use Knoppix on the net here is what I eventually did. Mind you bear in mind this is my experience using Paradise, other ISP's may be different

Hit the big "K" on the left hand side, run the mouse up to Internet and then out to KPPP internet dailup tool, from there setup-new-dialog setup(NOT WIZARD) Fill in connection name (anything you like) ADD the phone number and in the case of Paradise change the authentication to PAP(other ISP's may be different) after that go to DNS and put in your ISP"s web address (paradise.net.nz) and thats it ! When you back out you'l be asked your user name and password.
Click on connect and you should be there.

Go back to the big "K" and internet and find a browser.

Anyone know if you can save the KPPP settings in file on your HD other settings as well?? When you log out you are asked if you want your settings saved, but if they were I can't find them??

95527 2002-11-03 01:22:00 The settings will probably be saved,but on a RAM disk. :D Graham L (2)
95528 2002-11-03 10:16:00 Seems a bit odd to ask to save your settings and the very next action is to
deconstruct the whole system including your settings.

Sounds more like politics than IT!!!

95529 2002-11-04 03:02:00 You have to remember that this system was built up from components which expect to be running on a writable disk. It wasn't written from scratch as a CD runnable OS. Graham L (2)
