Ummm... most are not multizone? I'd have to disagree with that one there... late model dvd's are generally multizoned already, but manufacturers don't like specifying that they can play anything... believe it or not, New Zealand is the only country in the world where you can buy a multi-zone player.

Well, I'd have to disagree that digital is digital, that's just too simple a way to describe how the signal is processed. Why else would there be magazines such as "Tone" which discuss the quality of different units, etc? Case in point, a cheap as chips cd player will NOT outperform a top of the line Yamaha, Denon, etc.

Anyway... the sound quality is only ever going to be as good as the rest of the gear it is set up with. High quality cables, high quality amp and speakers will result in a decent sound.

Btw, a Pioneer DVD player costs $399 (AudioVision - High St, Auckland... I was there today) ... and it plays absolutely EVERYTHING... all zones, VCD, SVCD, etc.

95426 2002-11-02 20:10:00 Oh man so much to reply to :-)
Don't worry Baldy i didn't think your a smartarse.
Ok i too agree that the more expensive players have better DA converters. This will give you a better video picture. (not that most people would notice)
However i still stand on my position that audio does not have any DA converting so hence it does not matter as loshing tries to point out Re: Tone Magazines. (prove me wrong)

Now Baldy don't you go dissing China! I've just finished an international business course so i'm now fully against people who pass something because of where its made. It does not matter where it is made it's the company and it's quality procedures that differentiate between products. China is used because of it's cheap labour.
Also note i have nothing against Pioneer, infact i have a Pioneer receiver and i think it was the best value for money even today after 1 1/2 years of having it. However i would like to bag sony. Everyone thinks sony is good, you think this because of the advertising they do. But as most of us know sony just outsources all its hardware and gets it stuck together then sticks their name on it. They don't care "too much" what component is used as long as it is below the defined cost for that area of the project.

Um agree witheverything else been said, like its the rest of your setup that makes it count. Your system is only as good as it's weakest link. (gee doesn't the internet know about that!)

As for loshings coments on a cheap as chips player over a Denon. I agree that it won't outperform on the video aspect or the analoge video aspect. But if you have a coax or digital output for your audio it should not make a difference. Those type of players are priced higher usually because they have extensive after sales service also.

Oh 1 more thing. Baldy your comments regarding listening to a CD player over a DVD player, why do you think the CD player is better?

95427 2002-11-02 21:02:00 Hey Roofus,

Good points... what kind of receiver did you get?? I just bought one the other day!! The new Pioneer VSX-511 ... new model... good price too! $780 (through a friend)

Am looking to get either some DB speakers or AAD... what kind of setup do you have? Price range for speakers excl subwoofer would be $1300 - $1500 for me...

95428 2002-11-02 21:46:00 Yea i have a VSX - D608 It has a couple more connections but urs has a 24bit DA whereas mine has a 20bit DA. Not that i could tell the difference anyway.
My speakers are just Technics. SB-T100's and SB-CSS140's
I don't have a wooffer yet as i'm in no rush because the T100's give out some nice bass.
Total price of my speakers would have been about $500. So theres a bit of difference between what i have and what you want.

95429 2002-11-02 22:01:00 Hay this is great news!

I've got one to. Do you know what single digits you enter for the different zones are?
tarrangower (2382)
95430 2002-11-02 23:47:00 All my DVD players are MultiZoned .. except the PS2 (which u can make it multizone now a days) ... and I can tell the difference (picture quality / sounds) between my $1500 player and my other $300 players and PS2.

And guess what? One of my $300 player not only Multizoned but MacroVision disabled as well :O they didn't say it on the manual or the box ... I can record it to tape with excellent quality :D or input it to my PC to do some editing :D
mashimaro (2168)
95431 2002-11-03 03:43:00 I assume that you enter 1 for zone 1, 2 for zone 2, 3 for zone3, etc but for local use you enter 0. Go figure!

Cheers

95432 2002-11-03 04:20:00 I bought a Casio DVD player back when the cheap Pioneer etc was $700 - $800. I paid $500 for the casio which included $100 for the extended waranty.

At the time it was the only model available in stores apart from a Mitsubishi and a DSE one that could play MP3's hence my choice. It reads CDRs and CDRWs, has excellent picture quality a zoom function etc and has never balked on playing DVDs with different zones although I have only tried zones 1 and 4. Since my experience with this player, I beleive that expensive does not always equate to best and it definitely does not equate to value for money.

95433 2002-11-03 08:22:00 >>> the pioneer model just plays wot ever region it is

What pioneer model? My brother just got a pioneer 355 (I think) and he was told it's zone 4 (has zone 4 printed on the back) but hasn't tried it out on another region...
