95540 2002-11-02 20:28:00 I just intsalled Windows 98 (First Edition), along with drivers etc.
I installed IE6 off the PCWorld Plus! CD (Dec 2001/Jan 2002),
and unzipped DirectX 8.0a into the standard mssdk folder.
I ran the setup program, it required the mandatory reboot,
and when I start up I get a

While initializing device CM:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

I restart, and boot into safe mode fine, but then when I reboot into normal mode, I get the same error. Does anybody know how to fix this problem?

95541 2002-11-02 20:39:00 while in safemode loadup msconfig and disable any unncessary vxd's
the newest one is probably at the bottom and is the one causing the problem.

? why did you install 8.0a
isn't 8.1 out

I think I read in one of the News posts that 8.2 is out...

wasn't 8.0a the one with heaps of bugs?

95543 2002-11-03 08:50:00 8.0a is the bug fix ver of 8.0. 8.1b (as its so called) is a minor bugfix of 8.1.
8.2 is a bug fix upgrade for a few games that have problems with 8.1.
