95461 2002-11-02 08:11:00 Hi I put my maxtor 40 gig hard drive into another computer as a slave drive. The drive is picked up in the cmos and under device manager. How do I access it, as it is not showing up in 'my computer'. Any help would be appreciated.

95462 2002-11-02 08:18:00 Is it formatted, if so what format, what OS was it used on.

What OS is the old PC?

Do you want the data on it, or is it toast?

95463 2002-11-02 08:19:00 By "old" PC I mean the one you put the 40 GB drive into, it could be a new PC I guess? godfather (25)
95464 2002-11-02 08:22:00 Yes, it is formatted - ntfs. Heres the story. I have a computer, and my dad has a work computer. My computer is one sick puppy, so sick that i cant even do a windows xp repair installation without a blue screen and an error message. My mum has really important files on my hard drive, and she needs them really soon, so i figured i could put my 40 gig ntfs hard drive into my dads work computer as a slave, and access the file from there.

95466 2002-11-02 08:25:00 Being as you haven't mentioned what operating system you formatted the Maxtor drive with and whether it was partitioned into more than one drive I don't think I can help.

What operating system are you using in the computer it is now in?

More info will allow all us helpful folks to help you.

Being as the drive is recognised in the BIOS and Device Manager it seems to rule out things like cables or jumpers.

For example....
If, originally, you were using Win2000, NT5 or WinXP and used the NTFS file system. Then you put the drive in a system running Win98SE then Win98SE will NOT get the info off the drive.

Tell us more!!! :-)

95467 2002-11-02 08:28:00 The hard drive from my computer is ntfs, running xp pro, and has no partitions. The computer i put into is running 98, no partitions and the file format is fat32. jordan_XP (1994)
95468 2002-11-02 08:28:00 and what OS is your Dad's computer running? It may not be able to read NTFS formatted drives. segfault (655)
95469 2002-11-02 08:30:00 OK, did you set the jumper on the HDD as slave?
Is the work computer running W2000, NT or XP? (if not, you won't read NTFS)

As it shows in BIOS, the jumper may be set, but you would have likely had to change it for a slave setting. Have you *really* set it as a slave, or is it a master on IDE 1, with the normal HDD master on IDE 0?

If its on the same ribbon cable as the main HDD, it MUST be a slave.
If its on the other ribbon it could be either, depending if its on the "end" plug (master) or the plug down the line (slave)

Now, if you still cannot read it, there could be a permissions problem and I will leave you in others hands....they will be safer.

95470 2002-11-02 08:33:00 The two hard drives are connected up using the same ribbon. On my hard drive to set it to slave all you had to do was take all the pins out. jordan_XP (1994)
