95867 2002-11-04 08:09:00 Looking for recommendations for aide configuration on my pc.
Four aide devices are to be used.
Hard drive running windows me
Hard drive running windows xp pro
Dvd drive
Cd writer.
Pc is used as multi-boot with each os on a seperate drive with dvd and cd writer used in both.
Would both drives on the primary channel and dvd cd writer on the secondary channel be best?

95868 2002-11-04 08:17:00 Yes, HDDs on primary, others on secondary.

The only exception would be if one of the HDDs didn't support DMA because it would slow both drives down.

95869 2002-11-04 08:20:00 I would combine the hard drives on one IDE and the CDROM devices on the other. Even if both Hard Drives speeds vary it still wouldn't be as slow as having the DVD and CDWriter on the same IDE as a hard drive. ~qwerty (2369)
95870 2002-11-04 20:42:00 Is this because dvd and cd use ATA 33, which would set back the whole channel to ATA 33? roofus (483)
95871 2002-11-10 07:57:00 As I understand it cds should be on a seperate ide channel to the hard drive for reliable write operations.
As I run multiboot on seperate drives I thought the cds should go on the secondary channel for best performance.
This was why I posted the question,I have found various recommendations on web sites.most of which offer conflicting information

95872 2002-11-10 08:24:00 I'd suggest the HDD's on the Primary IDE and the other Optical Drives on the secondary. Each IDE shares bandwidth, so that'd be my suggestion, and also Optical drives apparently slow down the bandwidth when shared with a HDD (Minorly, but still..)

Cheers

95873 2002-11-10 20:58:00 Im sure PCW have done something on this recently, maybe it was the aussie one when they did RAID setup - step-by-step?!

I'll try to find the article

95874 2002-11-10 22:01:00 My Configuration. Win2k on one HD as master primary, CD R as primary slave and backup HD as master on secondary. When I setup the CD R this was the only way I could get the CD R to work with any speed. When it was setup with HDs on primary and CD R on secondary the CD R was so slow I had lots of coasters even with bufferunder enabled. I tried DMA on and off but made no difference. This is how I got success with my CD R so if there is a right way and a wrong way I would love to know why this setup works for me? What the other posts recommend is also what I would recommend but didn't work in my case.

95875 2002-11-10 22:03:00 You may only be squeezing out that extra little bit of speed. It shouldnt matter too much as long as your PC boots and both work fine (Including the CD-R/W at high speeds as mentioned) :) Chilling_Silence (9)
