96311 2002-11-05 16:25:00 My home pc kept crashing. Whilst trying to find the problem using the troubleshooting guide, I restarted and selected the step by step confirmation option. I have to admit, I didn't really know what I was doing and must have inadvertantly changed some settings.
When the pc rebooted, the display was set at the lowest possible resolution (like as in safe mode). I am unable to change this in the display tab. This is very fruatrating. Any help much appreciated.

Regards

96312 2002-11-05 16:37:00 I don't believe that you can change any settings using "step by step confirmation"
When you say you can't change the settings, do you mean that they aren't an option in the display properties?
Try reinstalling your video drivers see if that helps.
Otherwise go back to bed and pretend it's a bad dream.

96313 2002-11-05 16:44:00 Whilst in step by step conf, i pressed esc, which is the no option (as opposed to enter - yes)

I have limited options in the display properties, but when i try to change them, it tells me i need to restart the pc for changes to take effect. When it restarts it's back to square one.

Will give the video drivers a shot though.

Not too early over here my friend! 16:40!!!

96315 2002-11-05 19:38:00 Surely your screen resolution is the least of you worries at the moment. Don't you want to find out what was causing your PC to crash. Can you give us any information regarding this? roofus (483)
96316 2002-11-05 20:20:00 Hi. Your selective startup sequence will only have affected matters during that session alone - once you reboot the standard settings, drivers etc will have loaded - so that won't be the cause of your display issues. Reinstalling the vid drivers, as suggested, will be the first place to start.

What I'd recommend for troubleshooting your other issues, is to use the troubleshooting guide in the Windows 98 Resource kit. This little known [utility] is a condensed version of the book by the same name, and it comes free on your CD. You'll find it I think, in the Tools folder of your Win98 CD, called, reskit. Install it and go thru the guide.

Something else I used to do in my bad old days, when nothing else worked, was to reinstall Windows over your existing installation - it reverts all your settings back to defaults, so you may need to update many or all your device drivers again, but it won't delete your data files. If you go this route, post back again before you do, as there are a few precautions needed, to make life easier once it's done.

96317 2002-11-05 20:21:00 I forgot to mention - The resource kit is basically a super-help, and is far more advanced than the standard help that comes with Win98. Greg S (201)
96318 2002-11-06 19:51:00 Many thanks for the replies folks.

I've just reinstalled the driver for my graphics card and it has worked!
Don't know how the fault occurred exactly, but it's sorted.
As for my pc crashing, that is still a mystery. It hasn't happened in a couple of days but I'll keep an eye on it. Basically, when I'm online, the pc just freezes. All I can do is restart. Nothing works at all. I'll check out the resource kit though. Thanks again!

96319 2002-11-06 20:06:00 IainT. If you want to try and find out what is causing your computer to crash. Goto your run command (startmenu)
and type in drwatson. A man will come up in your taskbar. When your computer crashes he will record what caused it. Then when you can come back and tell us what caused it, then we can help you out.
Note you will have to load up drwatson each time your computer starts, or put it in your "startup folder"

96320 2002-11-06 20:51:00 Sounds to me like youi're working the computer too hard. In my early days (last year) I used to get crashes and freezes and wobbles and complete 'white-outs' (don't hear much about them). I would panic and click on everything if I still had a clicker and then pull the plug on it. Pace up and down for 5 mins and then re-boot and always worked.

I learnt (slowly) to only have open what I was using and closing the sites' buttons on the task bar when I didn't want them.

Clean out cookies, temp files & history often and run the maintenance regularly. Simple stuff, but effective. Have a look through the FAQs for some guides on keeping the little hummer mumming.
