96237 2002-11-05 10:53:00 There seems to be a pattern of things in the chain of events as my darling Vanessa (98SE) packs a sad just before needing a good reboot

This is hard to explain, but say i wish to:

xxxx xxxxxx insert text in the middle of xxxxxxxx xxxx xxx xxx xxxxx xx

i click here:

xxx xxxxxx| xxxx xxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx

and start typing. instead of adding text into the middle, it "forgets" to push the exsisting text forward, and overwrites, thus:

xxxx xxxxx insert text in the middle of xx

and overwrites the end of that line!

The only way to stop Vanessa from doing this, is to reboot

Does anyone else get this, and does anyone have any idea what causes it and how to stop it?

96238 2002-11-05 11:05:00 What you are most likely doing is accidentally hitting the Insert key. Hit it again and the problem will magically disappear. Whew, I like easy ones even I can answer! Gorela (901)
96239 2002-11-05 11:13:00 sorry,
but i am most definatly not hitting the insert key, nor is it a sticky insert key, as i changed keyboards a few months back, and this is something i have observed and put up with for longer than i care to remember

allthough i always wondered what the insert key did...

It also coinsides with the computer being a tad unresponcive, which may or may not lead to it becoming unbearably slow

96240 2002-11-05 11:14:00 I shall try hitting the insert key next time it happens though

96241 2002-11-05 19:31:00 Clueless,

If you're running MS Word, there should be in the status bar at the bottom the letters OVR - if so, this means that text will be overwritten when you paste or type. Hitting the Insert key will remove the OVR. Check that before you paste - there might be an option in the program settings to make Insert by default, rather than Overwrite by default.

96242 2002-11-05 23:20:00 No, I don't think i've run word for more than 10 minutes over the last 2 month.. where i generally see the problem is right here in my web browser, or in OE when sending E...
I shall have to wait till it inevitably reoccurs, but hopefully pushing "insert" should sort it

96243 2002-11-06 03:09:00 It's one of the little "features" . Insert/Overwrite mode . :_| When I first used a Teletype ASR33, it was in overwrite mode all the time . When the hammer hit the type cylinder, it pressed the character through the ribbon onto the paper . There was no way to "insert" characters . On the PDP8, hitting backspace would give a "\", then repeat characters backwards until you reached the last character to be deleted, then it would do another "\" and the new character . (If the papertape punch was enabled, it backspaced one character and punched all the 8 holes) .

The RT/11 on the PDP11 (with a video terminal) allowed you to set "screen" mode . Otherwise you got the default teletype behaviour . Then PCs came a long . With overwrite mode default in DOS . I hated it . Because I had got used to insert mode . I managed to stop arguing with one guy who had started computing on PCs by convincing him that "one's not better; they are different" . (Apart from that, with terminals there were people who liked "keyclick" and those who hated it) .

Anyway, I found a free programme called "dosed" which I still load to put DOS into insert mode, even though newer versions of DOS give the choice .

And I have just had this modern thing go into overwrite mode as I have been typing this . <Insert> fixes it, but :_|

96244 2002-11-06 03:21:00 Hey I get this happening too, I have been trying to look out for something that I am doing that may cause it to start doing this but so far haven't come up with any solutions.

Someone help us...
