96183 2002-11-05 08:12:00 I was unfortunate to loose my Dynalink Rural Modem during the recent storm, however...

I replaced it with a Dynalink PCI 1456-VQH-R1.

The replacement modem works very well in that it connects first try and I get a connection rate of either 48000 bps or 49333 bps via Paradise.

The problem is that we live in the back of nowhere, like our "telephone exchange" is a small building in a corner of a paddock and is about 15 kilometres away. The connection speed of 48000/49333 bps is just too fast for the phone line, the result of which is long periods of no data flow, even though I am connected.

Well today I proved it as my wife went to town for the day so I "borrowed" her modem, a 33.600 jobbie, installed it and oh joy it worked perfectly with no data dropouts.

Now the problem - how do I slow down my Dynalink PCI modem ?

I have tried - dialup network > paradise > properties > configure > connection >advanced > entering MS=V34 but I get an error message to the effect "the modem did not answer correctly" "error 730".

I need to take the modem down to 33600 bps, how can I do this?

Is it possible to repair a modem zapped by lightning?

96184 2002-11-05 08:25:00 It is possible to repair a fried modem. It is however, not viable.

Try setting your modem to max at 33k under the windows modem properties.

96185 2002-11-05 08:33:00 Ensure the Internet connection is closed.

Open the Control panel via Start > Settings > Control panel

Open the Modem - or Phone and Modem Options depending on what OS used.

Click the Modems tab.

Select the modem you want to modify.

Click Properties

On the General tab change the port speed to what you require.

Click OK twice.

Connect to your ISP and check the maximum speed.

Yes it is possible to repair a modem zapped by lightning. How much money do you have?

96186 2002-11-05 08:49:00 Tried that,38400 was the closest selection that Win ME would give but on rebooting I was again connected at 48000 bps.

Thanks anyway

96187 2002-11-05 09:06:00 Unfortunately the setting Merlin is only for the port speed,ie,the speed the modem talks the PC,so won't slow the connection down.the modem string you should be using should be

+ms=V34

Try that,it should work,Dynalink modems are Hayes compatable so it should recognise that command. If it doesn't,check you have the correct driver.Check the Dynalink site,or e-mail them and ask if you still have problems.
Hope this helps

96188 2002-11-05 09:31:00 Dynalink recommend:

&F%C0+MS=11,0
or
&F%C0+MS=V34,0 (if you have V3.210 firmware)

96189 2002-11-05 10:33:00 I did a quick check and its Rockwell/Connexant HCF based.

If you haven't already grab the updated generic drivers at:

www.conexant.com

I'm not in a rural area, but they made a huge difference in connection reliability.

96190 2002-11-05 10:52:00 After changing all the settings you might find that incorrect settings get locked in. First remove all extra settings and restart your computer.

For Win 95 98 ME
Double-click on My Computer, then double-click on Dial-Up Networking.
Right-click on the ISP connection icon and choose Properties.
Click the Configure button.
Change maximum speed to 38.400
Click the Connection tab.
Click the Advanced button.

In "Extra settings," enter the string. +MS=V34 you don't need anything else.
If you get modem not responding error then you need to delete +MS=V34 restart the computer and add +MS=11
Depending on your modem model one of those two strings will give you a 33k connection

Click OK to save changes.
Shut down the computer and turn it back
on to activate the changes.

96191 2002-11-05 18:58:00 Thanks for the reply Wuppo, though I have solved ,( or rather another contributor) , did, I intend to try out your suggested settings to see what happens.

Thanks

96192 2002-11-05 19:06:00 Hey - Thanks to all who responded.

Problem now solved. In the additional settings section of the modem properties panel I entered MS=V34 forgetting the little + sign at the beginning, ie +MS=V34. It's inclusion made a huge difference.

Now cruzing at 33.200 bps with constant data flow

To those who noticed my ommision - thanks heaps
