96056 2002-11-05 04:26:00 If you have gale force winds at your place today like we do, the kids might enjoy this site (doody36.home.attbi.com) until you give them the OK to light their sparklers. :-) Susan B (19)
96057 2002-11-05 04:35:00 Or if you're like me and think fireworks is an incredible waste of money, you can do what I'm doing - reinstall Windows (again) :D

96058 2002-11-05 04:36:00 Fireworks are nothing now, compared to when I was a kid. Baldy (26)

They are only an incredible waste of money when you have to buy them.

Bet they were one of the things you looked forward to the most when you were a kid, Mike!

I guess you're right - we've got a good view from out place, and have spent the last few days watching all the "pay" fireworks displays around the city for free :D

Nope :) My dad felt the same way LOL

96061 2002-11-05 04:45:00 Mike I'm half like you - fireworks is an incredible waste of money. We could eat at Mickey D's instead of lighting a $20 bill and watching it burn.

However, with noCD drive, reinstalling windows is not an option for me unfortunately, as much as I'd like to :D

Guess it's THPS3 again tonight...

96062 2002-11-05 04:48:00 I used to spend about $80 on fireworks every year but haven't spent anything this year :) I have learnt it is better to go watch it somewhere. Sam H (525)
96063 2002-11-05 06:31:00 What a bunch or boring old codgers
Fireworks are great fun for normal, well adjusted children who like making explosions and dangerous projectiles.

Many a GI Joe would tragically loose his legs or be propelled into space each Guy Fawkes at my house when I was a child.

Age blurrs the memory somewhat and I fear you have the rose-coloured spectacles on . There is no doubt that today's fireworks are a quantum leap forward on the miserable selection available in the 50s & 60s .

Okay we don't have bangers or skyrockets anymore but off-the-shelf jobs from the Warehouse make a bigger bang than even the biggest banger I could buy as a kid, and Jumping Jacks fizzed more often than they banged . Sparklers came in one colour only and didn't last long either, though I'll admit that the current direct equivalent lasts no longer . However, you can buy three sizes now and they last long enough to write more than two syllables .

The best skyrockets gave you 3 or 4 miserable coloured lights while the rest were just an orange streak . Display fireworks were not much more than the odd Vesuvious, Emerald Fire, Golden Rain and so on . If you wanted a better display you went to a public effort with Tommy Doo's imported specials and they were still not a patch on today's big displays .

Every year the range and quality gets better and better and they last longer too, none of your 5 second fizzers!

List a few of your favourites for us Baldy and we'll compare (fond & faded) memories .

As for the wowsers, you are only young once so make it last a lifetime . Never mind the archaic traditions, it is a good excuse for a bit of fun, kids love it and it is healthier and safer than Halloween .

Cheers

96065 2002-11-05 08:05:00 OK lets hear those stories of confusion and mishap that have happened on your guys previous guy fawkes nights, this is mine....

I once remember as a small child trying to light the wrong end of a sparkler, I thought the larger "rough" end is what I held onto (at the time it appeared to me that this was the end with more grip thus the end I was supposed to hold onto). :D :D Once an adult realized what I was doing and a couple of minutes later (for the thing to cool down) I was on my way. :D
