96379 2002-11-06 22:32:00 2 - 3 times a year. Mainly because I install something - press a wrong button and say S*#+T. or delete some thing from the Registry that I should'nt have. Laurie (485)
96380 2002-11-07 00:15:00 Install SP1 for XP, and also, create a system restore point. Many XP and also ME users dont realise that they can. And so for the likes of un-installing WMP9 Beta, you HAVE to use system restore coz there's nothing in Add/Remove Progs.

Small price to pay for a TRUE BETA tester. Otherwise, wait for the real thing!

96381 2002-11-07 00:36:00 Never have in 18 months. I'm with the ppl that just do regular clean-outs and maintenance.

Besides, not familiar enough with re-installing.

Seems to run sweet, though I like the spring cleaning aspect of it, seems like a good idea. :)

That's where registry backups come in very handy. Your computer should be creating one each day and all you need to is restore the last good copy. Saved my bacon a few times. :D

96383 2002-11-08 08:53:00 4 years on W98 no worries. I'm a keen tweaker(not overclocking) but have always managed to find a way out of strange places, except for a unreal encounter with Winfax. I have recently purchased a CDRW(thank God) and made a backup of my current HD setup 3 weeks previously which came in VERY handy.
So does this break my own record?

96384 2002-11-08 09:44:00 Only if I have to I use GoBack and fix it with pestpatrol also diskeeper and window washer along with ad-aware and reg cleaner so my system runs well usually for around 2 years or so kiwibeat (304)
96385 2002-11-08 11:03:00 Lately, about once a month, but that's because I have been trialling the different options available by Microsoft & quite frankly, I don't really like any of them. Windows 98SE would be my favourite. It seems any MS OS has an issue with some hardware or peripheal device, or a really annoying software glitch.

Before my testing, once every 4 - 6 months because I just cant help experimenting with my PC's settings & I've learnt how to really stuff things up well the first time, but the good side is, I've learnt how to fix it too.

Now I use Ghost, so restoring an image of Win98 takes 2 minutes, WinME takes 3 minutes, Win2k takes 4 minutes & WinXP 5 minutes. Linux is a different story. It never needs reinstalling, but I am trying as many of the different distributions that I can get my hands on to see which one I like the best & which kernel has the best support for my hardware "out of the box". I really like the desktop theme that comes with the PC world bootable PC World Knoppix CD * I will use it on my final choice.
