96369 2002-11-06 06:53:00 Never! PC over two years old with ME and never had to format it and too scared too just for the sake of it. Runs sweet with regular downloads and uninstalls of lots of stuff and regular maintenence. First PC to, didn't even know how to start and stop it when I got it. Really just a case of try all the buttons until something happend! :) Danger (287)

My better ½ is hoping to build a new computer, mix and match the bits, we will definatly reformat because she doesn't want her sons rubbish, and he doesn't want hers, and someone is getting the original HDD. I spose it's not totally needed, but its definatly the easy way to have 2 clean machines

96372 2002-11-06 07:36:00 For Win95 /98, once every 2-3 months. Since I upgraded to W2k, only once since upgrade about 2 1/2 years ago and that was because I was bored. bk T (215)

96374 2002-11-06 09:10:00 I'm with Roofus & Terry

Good houskeeping = 3 years+ and performance as good as ever it was.

However, if you want to fiddle with shonky software, make an image of your clean setup and just dump it back anytime you feel the need. Saves all that reconfiguring and finding drivers etc, and 30 minutes or less sees you running with a fully optioned but virgin install.

Why format more than once?

96375 2002-11-06 18:20:00 Beause I play with things so much it used to be once a month but that has gradually phased out to every 3 to 4 months . Its nice to run a clean system especially seeing as I install and uninstall a lot . I reformatted last weekend as I wanted to multiboot 98se, ME and XP but only got as far as XP and ME due to the "couldn't be buggered really" factor .

At work I'm formatting 1 to 2 computers a day . Usually customers systems ( I work for a retravision store selling the things ) 99% of them are corrupted due to viruses/spyware/Bad installs of programs and just plain pushing the shiny buttons to see what happens . Another main problem is people downloading all the "neat" free programs from the net that try to take over the system and the good old porn diallers . I try to clean as much as possible and I run fixit utilities 4 . 0 from Ontrack through the machines but most often a reformat is the only way to get things running fully again .

I also have to reformat the display systems every 30 days as we can't activate XP till its sold . Luckily all are sold with a recovery CD which makes my life bliss and the good thing about these CD's is they are a full version of XP with just the addition of all the drivers etc required .

been there done that :(

often a format reinstall is way faster than repairing it. thats wher partitions come in so handy.

i reinstall on average once everuy 6 months. usually a clean and repair keeps things going for years but when theres a mogor stuff up with a program its quicker to reinstall.

96378 2002-11-06 22:17:00 Wtih W98 I seem to reformat about every 4-6 months (when things stop working properly). Recently bought new pc and XP and have reformatted that about a dozen times so far trying to get rid of the bugs. When I get things going properly I create a drive image so the reinstall only takes an hour or two instead of the best part of a day next time. andy (473)
