2002-11-06 22:38:00 | >and wot's the difference between xxx.net.nz and .co.nz? .net.nz is much cooler .co.nz is intended as commercail mine are: millerton.co.nz, which currently has a boring website which i can't wait to pull down and put up one of my P.A./lighting gear. you know the sort of thing... ooo look at all these huge stacks of flash looking toys, wanna play with them? Cost ya! (i just need the time to get photos and build a page) something.net.nz which is down because that points to my own server which is down till i have the spare time to understand and fix it. something.net.nz was intended as a network of band related promotional material, and anything i felt like. Both these domains are registered through interspeed and cost me $50/year I have another couple they are in my name, but for other people.....

2002-11-06 22:42:00 | o yeah thats 50/year inc GST which i think equates to the same as anywhere else Interspeed had no problem pointing something.net.nz at my IP address, some of the people i contacted played dumb or refused, they were there to get a domain registered that they could then host (at a charge, of course) .Clueless

2002-11-06 23:42:00 | All New Zealand domain names are registered with Domainz. You can either register with them direct (horrible site and you will need to have the IP address of your host sorted in advance) or register through a third party - like freeparking or 2day.com, xtra, ihug... Some of the third parties make it dead easy, others more complex. Some will merely pass on the charge domainz charges them, others will add their fee to it (and not necessarily tell you about it!) Some sites will also only charge you for the domain name NOT the name holder fee. Try to avoid this - it means the host then owns the name. If you then want to move your site to a different host you may find yourself locked in. Places to visit to find out more: www.domainz.net.nz www.2day.com 2day no longer register names on your behalf but give you the instructions on how to do it yourself.

2002-11-07 05:13:00 | So what about somewhere like Free Parking (http://www.freeparking.co.nz) which state New Name Holder Account Fee (if no existing Holder ID) $0.00 is that good or not. ?:|

2002-11-07 07:37:00 | Domainz dropped the nameholder fee some time ago, there is no good reason i can see why an "agent" should still pass the "fee" on .Clueless

2002-11-07 08:17:00 | Domainz, themselves, is still charging the nameholder fee. Quote: "If you are a direct customer of Domainz, i.e. you receive your annual renewal from us, you should soon receive a 'postcard' detailing some upcoming changes. In summary, the changes are as follows: as from 1st February 2003, the new name holder fee (which only applies to new accounts) will no longer apply as from 1st February 2003, the annual renewal fee will be increased from $49.50 to $61.87 (inc. GST) " But it would appear that other .nz providers are no longer 'beholden' to Domainz. Quote: "Following the implementation of the Shared Registry Service (SRS) on 14 October 2002, Domainz ceased management of the .nz Register. In some of the system-generated emails Domainz currently sends, reference is made to the .nz Register in the subject line. We are endeavouring to remove any references made to Domainz previous management of the .nz Register in our correspondence and also on our website."

2002-11-07 09:48:00 | Some ISPs are offering to act as the party for annual registration. Xtra being one. Beware the massive price difference though, annualised its far higher than continuing to pay the (new higher) fee to Domainz, which you can still do. | godfather (25) | |
