96212 2002-11-05 09:27:00 The 'standard' cost for a .nz is $44 + GST per year, with a one off fee of $30 + GST to become a 'name holder'. (The name holder effectively 'owns' the domain name - beware of discount name providers that say you don't need to be a name holder. If you are not the name holder for a domain, you may find you can't transfer it to a host of your choice).
There are 'discounters' around if you search, but I use registerdirect.co.nz They park your domain for free (or more correctly for payinfg the annual registration fee via them), provide you with pop/imap email accounts and URL redirection. You have full control over these features via a control panel.

A .co.nz name is intended for commercial operations, a .net.nz is more specifically used for network operations e.g. ISPs.

Have a look around domainz.net.nz - the NZ registry.

easy as, cheap as with them. I had no hassles. They even warned me about the Ozzie scam.

96214 2002-11-05 10:11:00 Register Direct (http://www.registerdirect.co.nz)
Free Parking (http://www.freeparking.co.nz)
Domainz (http://www.domainz.net.nz)

I'm looking at getting one my self. The cost is $49.95 for the domain but you may need to pay ~$30 for a new name holder fee with some places.

You need to pay the $49.95 each year to keep it. That will usually include basic URL redirection and email accounts. Hosting will cost more.

96215 2002-11-05 10:24:00 In the beginning you could register a domain name and not use it. This led to the squatters grabbing them then selling them off to the highest bidder.

To try and combat this the system changed so that you actually needed to tie your name to a couple of IP addresses.

Poeple like freeparking and 2day.com (based on the North Shore) came along and offered free parking of the name. They provide the IP addresses and don't charge you for hosting them until you actually activate the account by paying them money and uploading pages.

Their theory is that if they offer the free space the Law of Lethagy will see to it that most people, once they come to use the name, will leave it right where it is. They then make their money out of hosting your site.

You can always free park the name and, once you come to use it, transfer it to the host of your choice. If you already have a host in mind then you may be able to register the name through them and start using it immediately. Check out your proposed host's website for this. Just watch that you are the Name Holder so that you, not the host, are the registered owner of the domain name.

The Name Holder fee is a once off for you not the domain. If you register another domain name you are already a name holder so don't pay this fee again.

96216 2002-11-06 04:23:00 thanks guys, but i'm still kinda lost, so if i buy the domain name, i have to pay each year for it to be kept active? vk_dre (195)
96217 2002-11-06 04:25:00 Exactly. TINSTAAFL. Graham L (2)
96218 2002-11-06 05:34:00 It goes like this with freeparking:

You give 'em your name
You give 'em the domain you want
You give 'em your credit card.

Once it is approved, you log in to freeparking, and type the address of your web site that you want the domain to point to.

My domain is www.design4web.co.nz and currently pointing to http:

try it.

You do this every year.

96219 2002-11-06 22:15:00 Name holder fee - pay once to register yourself. Bill comes with first domain name.

Domain name(s) fee - pay annually. You will be sent an invoice for each name once a year. Pay it and the name remains yours. Don't pay it and the name returns to the pool of available names.
