96653 2002-11-07 01:43:00 I have an 486 computer that I have manage to get running, but it has win 3.11 installed.
I try to run a CD-ROM Win95 installation disk to install, windows 95 but I get a message saying that there is already an operating system already installed use a Win95 upgrade disk.
How do I get around this problem?
I thought I could format the hard drive and then install but the problem will be that the CD drive will not be running if I do this. IS there a way of making a startup disk to run the CD ROM drive from win 3.11?
Has anyone have any ideas?

96655 2002-11-07 02:14:00 Once you've got UDB downloaded and installed onto a floppy, restart, booting off the floppy disk. Make sure you can access your CD-ROM drive (It may be drive E: instead of d: ) and if it has, then format your c: drive and install 95! Chilling_Silence (9)
96656 2002-11-07 02:28:00 If I remember correctly UBD sets the cd drive as r: or x: crozier (2004)

96658 2002-11-07 02:47:00 Or... create your own startup disk from Win98/Me if you are already running that. Do it from the Startup Disk tab in Add/Remove programs.
This site (www.9three.com) will guide you through the process. Also dont forget to read FAQ#1 from the top of this page.

The startup disk has cdrom support option, and you can fdisk and format the hard drive.

96659 2002-11-07 03:13:00 You have a full W95 CD. If it finds a file called WIN.COM, it decides not to let you install W95. "because you are doing an upgrade and should have bought the cheaper upgrade version". I don't know how stupid they are, but ...

Boot your computer. Exit from W3.1 . In DOS, first do a directory of the CD. If you can do this, then rename C:\windows\win.com to oldwin.com . cd to the CD ;-), and run setup.

96660 2002-11-07 04:02:00 As well as renaming win.com, you will have to rename winver.exe as well. This file may not exist in 3.11. I have used full version cd's to update from w95 to w98 with no problems after renaming. Best way is to format & start from scratch - with a bootable floppy.
bye
