96539 2002-11-06 08:11:00 Friends - I would really appreciate your help here i.e I cant seem to shutdown my computer and screen using the start - shutdown procedure. I have to switch it off from the power switch on the wall. gives_ur_hand (2465)
96540 2002-11-06 08:37:00 i think you might be infected with a Virus type program.
To fix it got o:
<START>
<RUN>
and type :
MSconfig

in the startup menu Search for a file from
C:\windows\system\kernel32.exe
untick the file restart

96541 2002-11-06 08:47:00 Nothing to do with Mark's problem, but my laptop has lost its ability to auto shutdown - I always get the "it's now safe to shutdown you computer" message and have ti hit the off button.
I"m running XP Pro on a PC Co laptop. It's a long story to do with a dynalink USB DSL modem I *had* that wouldn't go. I readon a forum that it was the auto shutdown feature that was stuffing it up. Duly went to device manager, change the "computer"setting type to "standard PC" and now of course no auto shutdown.
Any ideas how I can get it back? I've tried rolling back the driver, searching for a new driver, showing me a list of drivers etc but the only option I now get is standard PC...I think the term is ASPI or something like that?

96542 2002-11-06 09:01:00 THis seems to be a common Windows 98 problem. Try :
www.microsoft.com

or a search on "hanging windows". Failing all that i can email you the app. I have it on Floppy as it is such a common occurence.

96543 2002-11-07 04:17:00 try entering BIOS and also enabling Advanced Power Management. vk_dre (195)
96544 2002-11-07 04:45:00 BIOS is probably okay though coz it did work... Right-Click on the desktop and go Properties

Select ScreenSaver tab
and now click on Power down the bottom

Find something probably labelled APM up the top and enable Advance Power Management!

96545 2002-11-07 06:59:00 knew I shouldn't have added on to a thread but it seemed like a good idea at the time...in my bios there is no advanced power management options, not any type of power management options. falvrez (390)
96546 2002-11-07 07:04:00 again no options there for power management.

I ran Apmstat.exe with the -v option and it told me that I have defeinetly got acpi over apm.
So then I edited the txtsetup.sif file and changed the ACPIoptions line ACPIEnable = 2 to ACPIEnable = 1 but that made no difference at all.
So then naturally I reinstalled Win XP hoping like hell that would work, but no.
