| 96535 | 2002-11-06 08:04:00 | Anyone got a simple fix for this? Computer (Ultra Prima 400C 256M 15G Win 98 SE) boots up fine but sometimes the task bar icons are inert, no response to the mouse. Desktop items will open with the mouse cursor but that's about it. Windows key works and I can tab ok to close down. Sometimes it takes two or even three cold boots to come right. Other times (rarely) booting up fails to capture the modem, again a cold boot or two and everything is ok. System is normally rock solid. Ideas?? Thanks in anticipation |

Try the following and report back: Go Start | Run | type in msinfo32 | Ok | maximise Components | Click on Problem Devices If anything is shown here, let us know. Or... Reboot your PC, and hold the Ctrl key - this will give you a startup menu - select Safe Mode. Once running: Right click My Computer | click Properties | Device Manager | check to see if there are any items that are maximised and have an exclamation icon over them. If so, report back again. Also, maximise every device in turn, to see if there's any identical duplicates. If so, delete the extras, reboot, and see if that helps. |

I have just cleaned up some extra drivers that were exposed in safe mode, so I will see how it goes from there, but if you wake up in the middle of the night with something quite definitive let me know. Thanks |
