96530 2002-11-06 07:36:00 Programs and applications keep locking up requiring me to reboot 4 or 5 times a day. After each reboot things run okay for a while then it locks again, I also experience the Blue screen of death with various error messages. One message that has come up a couple of times is Low on resources. I doubled my Ram to 512mb but this didn't solve the problem. What is Low on resources pointing to? What other areas can I look at that may help, have I got faulty Ram, do I need to reload windows, have I got a virus or a faulty application?

I'm running a Celeron 333A with 512mb Ram, Windows 98 version 4.10.1998 .

96531 2002-11-06 09:30:00 Low on resources does not refer to memory, but "heaps" or "pointer tables" within the system.

You cannot "increase " them, but you can try and find out what is using them.

Old 16 bit programs often dont release them when they have finished, neither do some badly written programs. If you run an application such as TClock.exe, you can monitor the resources as you go (in the clock display).

On earlier Windows I used to reboot 3 or 4 times a day, and all was sweet. XP does not seem to suffer the same, just keeps on going.

96532 2002-11-06 20:44:00 Yes as godfather says, low resources has nothing to do with your RAM.
To help you find out whats causing your computer to crash run "drwatson" from the run command in the start menu.
You will need to load this at startup so stick it in your "startup folder" he will sit in your taskbar and record your crashes. THen when this happens you can tell us what he said, and hence we can help you out.
Also if you go into drwatson and change the view to advanced, you will see there is a 16bit modules tab. These are the things that contribute to your "low resources problem" Now most of the microsoft ones are required. But if you can see others in there from programmes you run, then maybe you need to change the software you use or update it.

does it happen in one particular program? or random all over the place.

96534 2002-11-06 21:54:00 Thanks for the pointers, I'll load up Dr Watson and see what comes up. The locking up is pretty random, it even locked on Windows Explorer. I have scanned the PC recently for Viruses and came back clean but I guess thats not a 100% guarantee. Parma (2464)
