96884 2002-11-07 19:48:00 hi, i was wondering if anybody is using thier pc to record tv programmes.
i am quite keen to try it but im not sure of the practacalilities of it.
how much disk space is required, quality of picture, is time shifting as good as it sounds.
my long term plan is to turn my current pc into a dvd player, "video" recorder, mp3 jukebox, cd player etc . it seems to make sense to have one thing that does it all rather than the multiple products spread around the lounge as i have now.
any info greatfully accepted.

96885 2002-11-07 20:12:00 You would require very large HDD 80 gigs plus and a fairly modern PC 1 GIG htz plus with lots of ram.
My PC 1.2 duron 512 ram with a dvd drive does most things but havent tried tv conversion yet. still working on dvd to divx the to vcd takes forever even on a fast system wait till dvd rewritables are cheaper then you will have a cheap solution to recording tv programs

96886 2002-11-07 20:42:00 Your going to need a hardware MPEG encoder or a software (preferably hardware)

and if your gonna use your computer for all these things you might even need more than 80GIgs.
Recording an MPEG at 320 resolution (TV quality at fullscreen) it uses about 10Mb a minute.

http://www.tomshardware.com should be able to help you out

96887 2002-11-07 21:31:00 U'll need heaps of hdd space and depends on the compression u might not even get the quality u would expected at full screen. Most $250-$300 DVD players (as mentioned in one of our threads few days ago) will happily play DVD/SVCD/VCD/MP3/CD/CDRW/ ... practically plays anything .. and use a VCR to record would be a better option :)

The only thing that it doesn't play is Divx :(

Lo.

96889 2002-11-07 23:38:00 Well they do but the quality is worse than seding it down a cable to your computer.
Also the software that comes with tv tuner cards lets you record only avi and its in a screen the size of a floppy disk.
So not much use

96890 2002-11-07 23:48:00 Roofus is right, the TV tuner card is a poor substitute for an MPEG hardware decoder.

Actually any use of a PC for TV is a compromise, ditto for DVD.
Do not expect results as good as dedicated appliances.

I run a TV "window" while working (TV card) which is fine, but if I maximise to full screen its poor resolution.
