96812 2002-11-07 08:23:00 Is there any way I can install a local server on my win98 sys to preview php pages before I upload them to my website? SpiderVenom (1412)
96813 2002-11-07 08:31:00 Also, what do I need to put an installation of JavaServer Pages onto the Unix server? SpiderVenom (1412)
96814 2002-11-07 08:41:00 Brett,

I asked a similar question a while ago, and Graham L sent me to here which gave instructions on how to set up IIS (from Win XP and 2000) and PWS (from Win 98) to handle PHP. Most of the instructions for PWS are at the bottom of that page.

PWS is the Personal Web Server that can be installed from the Win 98 CD.

96816 2002-11-07 08:59:00 If you need help, either with that or with PHP, just post back and I'll see what I can do :) I haven't used PWS, as I'm using IIS on Windows XP, but I might be able to help with some stuff :D

96817 2002-11-07 09:37:00 I'd stay away from PWS for '98 - there are big bugs and M$ tell you how to get around them but won't help you any more than that.

I've tried it and found it to be a big pain in the butt, considering all the extra heiffer dust that gets installed with it.

MySQL (which you need for PHP) is available for free somewhere.

I strongly suggest that you stay away from PWS though. Try something else, sorry can't reccomend anything

Why do you need MySQL for PHP?

>>> Try something else, sorry can't reccomend anything

Apache would be the best thing, if you can figure it out :)

Only to someone using web databases - any joe bloggs making a typical html website doesn't need it... same goes for PHP... it's not needed - it's only useful if you need a database.

96821 2002-11-08 00:19:00 installing webservers locally with php and mysql can be really simple when using a prepackaged setup like OpenSA (www.opensa.org/) (which i use) or FoxServ (http:) (heard about it, apparently very good). i also noticed that the file size is about 3/4 that if you downloaded each part (apache, mysql and php) seperately
when i first started making webpages bout 2 month ago, i got in as deep as i could, so went out, downloaded an apache webserver, a php module, and mysql server, but had problems, cos i didnt really know what i was doing, so luckily i found OpenSA, and it made things a lot easier, which meant i could get down to business, and learn about mysql and php. now i feel pretty confident, even helped out some other people with mysql and php questions. php and mysql is totally awesome, and am currently deciding if its a good career option (sal the web developer ;))
