| 97000 | 2002-11-09 02:11:00 | I've got a copy of DOS1.0 on ROM. It's a Disk Operating System without a disk. Terminology is best avoided. It bites. "DOS" in this context, refers to any "OS" based on Microsoft's copy of a "quick and dirty" 16 bit OS, based on C/PM (which was an OS for the 8080 and especially the Z80). DOS became a generic name from MS's trademark, MSDOS. IBMDOS, and DRDOS, now FreeDOS (... etc ?) are all programme loaders, reverse engineered from MSDOS. Of course, no "DOS" is really an operating system. ;\ They're programme loaders. None of them is *nix, though there are packages around which put a front end to make "DOS" resemble *nix, VAX/VMS, etc. *nix isn't a "DOS", it's an OS. The same applies to OS/8, RT11, CTOS, OS9, VMS, Primos, RISCOS, ... Anyway, what's this got to do with telnet? :D |
