97548 2002-11-13 10:26:00 Already had that option (to view hidden files) turned on, and no sign of a file called "thumbs.db". At least not in any of the folders in question.

Could they be stored in some other system folder somewhere, perhaps?

97549 2002-11-13 10:41:00 I took a folder that had no Icon, and there was no "thumbs.db" file.

I created an Icon image, and the "thumbs.db" file appeared.

And you could rename it.

So the logical conclusion is, if you create a folder Icon, thats where it stores the picture info.

Assuming you have searched your HDD for db files, however it could be a registry based value for default Icons? Try Google

As I mentioned, I don't use that view so have not needed to go there.

97550 2002-11-13 13:37:00 Well now I'm really confused. I tried your procedure but no "thumbs.db" file appeared. Also a search of my WinXP drive shows no "thumbs.db" anywhere at all in there.

When you say "created an Icon image", I wonder if we're talking about the same thing. I notice on the Folder Properties window there is a section entitled "Folder Pictures" (for choosing the image displayed on the folder in Thumbnails View, which is what I was talking about), and beneath that is another section entitled "Folder Icons" (for choosing the image displayed in Icon View). Do you think we might be crossing these wires somehow?

BTW, thanks for your perseverance with this thread. I feel like a right dope on this one.

97551 2002-11-13 20:40:00 I right click a folder, select Properties, customise, under "choose picture" I select a picture from within the folder, open, apply.

This instantly creates a hidden file thumbs.db.

Looking at the file with notepad, reveals nothing readable, and at 10k size I suspect it is the thumbnail image itself.

My question: Are you able to view hidden files?

97552 2002-11-14 09:46:00 I think so.

When I click on "Tools", "Folder Options", and then the "View" tab, I see an item called "Hidden files and folders". I see there that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected.

Just to make sure, I selected the "Do not show..." option, clicked "Apply", and then went back to "Show..." and clicked "Apply" again. Still no new file appears.

Am I missing something here?

97553 2002-11-14 09:53:00 Sorry. Can't help.
