| 97712 | 2002-11-11 03:04:00 | A bit of a long posting, I hope I have set it out right, checked it a few times and all looks ok. When I log on to Linux Mandrake 8.2 I had it set up with Graphical Mode Login (i think) now it is a Console Mode login ( I have to type in user name/Password for that user then type startx, I am then presented with the desktop. Before I seem to remember I had to type into graphical boxes. Anway main problem or not, how to connnnect to the Internet quickly. On the desktop is a folder "Connnect to Internet" double click on that and then presented with KPPP screen stating; Connect to....... Login ID......... Password....... I then press "Connect" A screen pops up "Connnecting to www.blah blah" at the bottom of that it states "Initializing modem". In the background another box "Login Script Debug" About 2minutes 10 seconds after pressing "connect", the modem starts dialing. When it has finished dialing I then have to open a browser, which for the moment I use Konqueror Web Browser, then I type in the address I require. Is this correct or is there a faster way, under Win-Blows it only takes a few seconds to dial in and connect. To shut down I click on the ISP address at bottom of desktop press "disconnect" and then I get KPPP screen press "Quit". I close the browser down at top of screen by clicking on the X on top right. I then back at the desktop. Microsoft Windows ME and Linux Mandrake 8.2 HPPAV 6700 Processor Intel(r) Celeron(tm) processor GenuineIntel ~600 Mhz BIOS Version Version 3.03 Total Physical Memory 190.45 MB Available Physical Memory 14.42 MB Total Virtual Memory 690.45 MB Available Virtual Memory 393.26 MB HDD 15 GB Dynalink 56K External eModem HP ScanJet 3300C Scanner HP DeskJet 930C Printer Oh another thing is there a program like Note Pad in Winblows for Linux, and if so whats it called, I have been using KWord for all text but could use a notepad program. cheers merlin-nz ;-) |

| 97713 | 2002-11-11 03:52:00 | What device is kppp using (its in the settings somewhere) e.g /dev/modem ? Try changing a device link as mentioned on: www.dynalink.com.au Isn't there something like Kate or Kedit for KDE? Alternative console based editors are pico or even vi ;) |

| 97714 | 2002-11-11 07:39:00 | In KPPP there is a panel for modem settings. There is a button that when clicked will chat to your modem & detect/set everything. Give that a go & see if it speeds things up. You can close the debug window too if you don't want to see it. |

| 97715 | 2002-11-12 04:19:00 | Pico and joe are good, simple, editors. The internal editor of Midnight Commander ("mc") is also good. vi is not really anyone's choice. It takes a lot of learning. ;-) Two minutes to initialise a modem seems excessive. I think that something is wrong :D I agree, check the settuings with kppp. |

| 97717 | 2002-11-12 09:29:00 | Hi guys and thanks, Checked out KPPP and yes there was the problem, 120s Timeout, tried to change to 5s no good, tried 5s each time up till 30s when all seems to be working. For some reason it wont initialise any quicker than 30seconds. But hey better than 120sec. Just took out a book from the library "Linux for Windows Addicts" I see a bit of stuff in there I might be able to understand. I dont think much on the browsers, But I suppose I'm used to opera.:D About the connecting to the web bit, any help there, or is that normal. Cheers for now merlin-nz ;-) |
