97538 2002-11-10 07:33:00 When an image is displayed on a folder in Explorer (such as the album art for music folders recorded with Media Player) where does the image get stored?
If I change it (using Folder Properties - Customize tab), will the image be lost forever or can I restore it later?
I notice that some other folders (usually system folders) show thumbnails of pictures that are not associated with the folder (or even that user!) at all. The pictures chosen seem to be random. These folders cannot be customized in the same way as the Customize tab is missing from Folder Properties. Is there a way to customize these "uncustomizable" folders?

97539 2002-11-12 08:31:00 Is everyone stumped? Or is the answer so obvious everyone is waiting for me to click? ;-) Olorin (1639)
97540 2002-11-12 08:34:00 Well, personally, I have no idea what the hell you're on about...

97541 2002-11-12 08:39:00 I'm pretty puzzled as well but that's because I have Win 98 and don't have thumbnails on my folders. What Windows version do you have? Susan B (19)
97542 2002-11-12 08:50:00 May I join in the wild guessing ........

Are you wanting to change the icon for your folders? When you have it set to display large thumbnails, do you want a different image (icon) displayed?

Can you also give an example for one of the system files that you mentioned that has an image (?icon) that looks weird.

97543 2002-11-12 09:12:00 Oops, too vague huh?

I have Win XP Pro.

What I'm talking about is the preview images that you see on some folders in Windows Explorer when you are in Thumbnails View.

Sometimes its obvious where the images come from (eg a folder with images stored in it will show up to 4 preview images on the containing folder icon - to show you what is stored in the folder, I guess), but there are other situations which seem random and/or inexplicable.

For instance, when you record a CD with Media Player and you elect to get the track names and album art from the internet database.

When you use Explorer (in Thumbnails View) to look at the folder containing the music you just recorded, you will see the album art on the folder icon.

And if you right-click the folder and choose "Properties", you will see a tab called "Customize". Here you will find a button allowing you to deliberately choose a picture to display on the folder icon. However there is no indication where the album image is stored. I would have thought the browser would default to the directory containing the existing preview image, but it doesn't.

So if you choose another picture, will the album art be lost forever?

And also, I have seen some other folders which showed preview images on them - images which were not in the folder or even related to the folder! Or even the folder's owner!! And, of course, when I go to Customize the folder by clicking "Choose picture", there is no indication where the existing preview image comes from or how it got there in the first place!

Is all this specific enough?

97544 2002-11-12 09:28:00 Well, I'll have to wait until my new PC is up and running with Win XP before I'm qualified to answer this one, but I'll have a guess.

Win 98 has thumbnail previews for its files rather than for actual folders and as far as I know they aren't stored anywhere, they are just little images of the files. It sounds like yours are different, however.

Obviously you want to change your thumbnail previews but don't want to lose the original previews in case you want them back, right? Is it not possible to create a copy of a folder to play with and try out different scenarios?

Failing that, when our Win XP experts see this thread I'm sure they'll be able to offer some advice, so don't give up.

97545 2002-11-12 09:37:00 The image *should* be in a hidden system file within the actual folder.
"thumbs.db"
It will probably get replaced if you replace the picture, so yes it could be gone for good. You could of course rename it first, it will warn you as its a system file, your own risk...

The following may also be of interest,

If you want to create your own, simply take a graphic, rename it folder.jpg and place it in the folder.
It automatically becomes the default graphic for the folder icon in My Computer and Explorer windows.
If you're creating a graphic to become a folder icon, try to make it square - such as 200 by 200 pixels - to make it fit best on the folder.

I cannot offer advice on it, as I always have details turned on. I use my PC for business and the thumbnails are just too clumsy for displaying files.

97546 2002-11-13 09:10:00 A hidden file. Yeah thats just typical of Windows.

Is there any way to control how Windows sets the "thumbs.db" image?

Can the hidden file be unhidden? (in order to rename it)
Olorin (1639)
97547 2002-11-13 10:01:00 In file Explorer, click Tools-Folder Options-View
Select "Show hidden files and folders"
