1320329 2012-12-27 10:12:00 I recently installed Office 2010 on my Windows 7 Home edition PC. I also bought a Chinese language pack so my wife could use it to write Chinese characters, which is great. However the language pack is always on, which is fine when you are trying to write in Chinese, but not very helpful when I am trying to type a URL in a browser, search for a file on my computer, or play a first person shooter!

Can anyone suggest how I might tame this thing so it only works when I want it to?

Open Word and click the File tab > Options > Language, on the center/right panel set the one you want to default, Click OK, close word and when it reopens it hopefully will be back to what ever the default is.

1320332 2012-12-28 01:36:00 Sorry guys, I tried these these tips, but no joy. Even when I type randomly on the desktop I get Chinese characters! Monkeywrench (15484)
1320333 2012-12-28 01:44:00 I haven't looked at the links but this (windows.microsoft.com) may help. Tony (4941)
1320334 2012-12-28 09:23:00 OK. Found my own solution. The default keyboard in the Control Panel had been set to Chinese by default & all I had to do was to re-insert a NZ English keyboard and make it the default. Problem solved! Thanks for your help. :-) Monkeywrench (15484)
