1295622 2012-08-20 03:32:00 Got a mate who is looking for a new phone (second hand is fine though) and is looking for basically a smartphone similar to the Galaxy S. Would he be fine to get a Galaxy S or is there another more up to date phone around the same price range with similar/better functionality? xyz823 (13649)
1295623 2012-08-20 03:51:00 Huawei G300
Or Sony xperia u if you are fine with buying online. The xperia u is a lot smaller, only 4gb storage + 2gb for apps, and no sd card slot. But, it has a dual core processor.
If you are just looking at something similar to the Galaxy s you probably want the Huawei G300. 4inch, 800x480 screen, sd card slot and a removable battery, 512mb ram, 1ghz single core cpu, 5mp camera with flash. Also, battery life is apparently decent.

Or maybe even the HTC one v?

1295624 2012-08-20 04:02:00 If you get the Galaxy S, it's well worth taking the time to flash a custom version of Jellybean on it for him. I've just done it for my brother, sister-in-law and a couple of mates (Coz they were pretty damn popular back in the day) and it makes a MASSIVE difference to the phones and the speed. It's not difficult to do either, and pretty damn tough to brick the phones even if you *intentionally* try... Having done that a week ago now and seen it, I'd personally recommend that over the cheaper el-budget Huawei $200 devices you can pickup...

If you're going for the One V then look for it from Cool Mobile.

1295625 2012-08-20 05:18:00 With my luck I could brick it. I'm surprized that you could load Jellybean on to one of these devices. Well done.. You could have quite a little cottage industry there if you wanted.. :-) paulw (1826)
1295626 2012-08-20 05:29:00 Funny enough I actually bought the mag this month and it has a full review of phones under $400 and I think the full reviews are on the site gary67 (56)

Of course! I've done it for my brother and a mate too, easy! My SII is running a custom 4.0.4 currently, I need to find some time between work and study to update it :D

He should be sweet with it, he's done his ipod, PSP Ps3 etc etc with various mods and custom firmwares etc :p

1295628 2012-08-20 09:53:00 I'm seriously think about getting a Vodafone smart 2 as a budget smart phone, I know it's not the greatest phone out there but it will do what I want it to and I can afford one gary67 (56)

Yup, its not bad. Had a play with one in store and its pretty fast. Not to say it doesn't lag, but I loaded it up with widgets and still found the homescreen transitions to be pretty fast. Also, for a touch more, what about the sony xperia u? If only it had a sd card slot, but still might be an option.
