1295833 2012-08-22 11:09:00 And the NZ Defence forces are now saying that MRAPS are a bit too big for the roads.

There are lots of provinces in Afghanistan - is Bamyian the only one with narrow roads ?

And therein lies the insoluble problem. One size does not fit all conditions. And a small country like NZ just has to pick the best compromise vehicle it can afford.

The MRAPs are strong but necessarily heavy machines. Excellent on wide firm surfaces such as in some deserts, much of Europe, and parts of Russia (likely battlefields). However not so good in soft ground, mountains, and narrow crumbling roads - which are common in much of the world. Solid wide roads don't exist away from cities.

1295834 2012-08-22 11:40:00 I will try to do some research and find out how many humvees the US has in Afghanistan and how many MRAPs they have.

My guess would be very few humvees, (none in combat zones) and thousands of MRAPs.

The US troops hate humvees, they call them "kevlar coffins"

I do admire the Spitfire and Mr Mitchell who designed them, and the Supermarine company that financed them before the British government orderded them.

But honestly the Spitfire and the 109 were about equal and they leap frogged each other in performance over the years. (The Hurricanes were always 3rd in the race)

The main reason that Britain won the Battle of Britain was that they were fighting over their own airfields and the Germans were at extreme range.
And the Germans made a few strategic mistakes just when Britain was running out of planes and pilots.

1295835 2012-08-22 22:20:00 The Spitfire's greatest victory was winning over the newspapers . It was unable to fly as often as the Hurricanes, so it didn't do as well against the Germans . (Since Camm started as a carpenter, he was probably invisible to "proper" circles . )

But honestly the Spitfire and the 109 were about equal and they leap frogged each other . . .

How much of this leapfrogging behaviour (somersaulting was more common) was due to the pathetic undercarriage design both displayed?

1295836 2012-08-22 23:10:00 The hurricane was the work horse shooting down the bombers, while the spit was more like a gay bar loiterer. prefect (6291)
1295837 2012-08-22 23:53:00 Lets change the rules of any war -- Arm everyone with paint guns, and IED's are paint bombs- you get hit - you get sent back home with a bruise and a rag to wipe off the paint.
Yes, it's a pity so many people are keen to go off and shoot others.
If they all weren't these leaders would have to resort to a boxing match between each other or something...

1295838 2012-08-23 01:40:00 Its human nature to kill each other, always has been, is now and always will be. I do not have a problem with it. Its because there is always going to be some bad ass that will cause innocent people grief, you can not just roll over.
The best example I can think of is the crushing of the filth tamil tigers by the Ceylonese government forces.
