1320023 2012-12-25 11:13:00 Sure if you're dealing with a business pay before, but if you're dealing with someone on the net who you don't know who built a computer once....then yeah I'd want to make sure the thing worked before putting money down. I personally think you're better off buying a pre built box from computer lounge. Or if it's just for running word etc buy the likes of an HP 6200 Small form factor PC that come with a 3 year onsite waranty. Alex B (15479)
1320024 2012-12-25 11:30:00 Anyone who watches "Fair Go" knows that you never pay for goods not received.
Without the guarantees provided by Visa, or PayPal I have no way of knowing that I won't loose my money.

I am largely disabled, and living in a rest home my income after rest home fees is $42 per week. I have to be frugal and cautious.

When was the last time you went to McDonalds? They'll disagree with that statement I'm sure. On Fair Go / Target they're more talking about services rendered, such as hiring somebody to build a deck, paying up-front. I'm yet to see a "Guy Fawkes Special" where they let you take the fireworks out, you use them and "make sure they make a big enough explosion", then return to the store to pay for them. That's not how the world works.

Buy from a reputable retailer, problem solved.
Even on TradeMe 9/10 people won't ship until they've received payment.

Just order one of these then, it'll do what you want: www.pbtech.co.nz

1320026 2012-12-25 13:30:00 Whats your budget Vince? Iantech (16386)
1320027 2012-12-25 19:02:00 I wouldn't pay in advance of delivery. I would pay in full by internet banking immediately on delivery of a working computer.

No-one will do that for you. As has been said, fair Go are talking about tradesmen, doing large jobs, where you make progress payments instead.

Computer Lounge are totally trustworthy and have a good reputation, google it, they won an award this year for it.
They have excellent after sales service too, so no worries if something should go wrong later - they honour warranties and go out of their way to assist.

You would do worse elsewhere.
Pay it with your credit card - that way, you are safe, no goods and Visa do refund you, you know.
If you are that paranoid.

1320028 2012-12-25 20:29:00 You could just go to Harvey Norman, Noel Leeming, Dick Smiths if you want to pay at collection of goods. For simple uses, they would fit the bill. They are more expensive and less bang for the buck. Even the second hand sub $100 computers might be ok. We have a old Dell - Seagate hard drive, a Dell motherboard with the same chipset audio, lan etc... many of the used items are the ex corporate so they are a bit better than the consumer range.

In perspective, when I am building a computer for family here, young people that is, but are your average Joe/Jane needs. I basically put a system together for $400 max. For average needs, the chipset and the features doesn't matter. They could get something older but still new. Maybe just a standard reliable chipset "brand/line". 1x HDD support and USB 2.0 ports, builtin video card, modest 4GB RAM nowadays, pick a Seagate or Western Digital HDD - DONE.

1320030 2012-12-25 21:49:00 What is your budget and do you want it futureproofed?
Do you want expansion for later improvements?

1320031 2012-12-25 22:15:00 I have had my last two desktops built by PC's Unlimited in Washington Way, off Moorhouse Avenue near the old Railway station. I have had no problems with them. Brucem (8688)
