I had a belkin from pbtech, it overheated like you wouldn't believe. The genius router it's been replaced with is ok, but the netcomm i had between the two was the best. |

| 1296098 | 2012-08-22 00:48:00 | I have never had a problem with our RTA1320. Bearing in mind I did stick a case fan on it to stop the little bugger spontaneously combusting. The belkin WAP has been rock solid too. The analogue phone has more issues. But we wont go there. |

| 1296099 | 2012-08-22 01:23:00 | However the Technicolor TG582n (the 'new' Thomson brand) that Telecom now give away are extremely robust - a huge improvement. I can still make them fall over very quickly. It all depends on the apps you're using and the load you place on it. It's definitaley the router, as if we reset the router, or switch them over, the internet goes fine again. I just switched over routers just before, as one of them is a slow peice of ****. Unfortunately it's not quite that clear-cut, though having a known bad router makes things even worse. So the exact same as our router then. We use netgear, but still needs the reset several times a day to keep things sort of running. Could be the router, could be the line. I'm not a fan of the Netgear stuff either personally. My thomson used to randomly stop working and sometimes take a couple of power cycles to kick it back into life so I gave it away and got a better one. The people I gave it to say it work's fine and never gives them grief, weird. Yup, my guess is they have one, maybe two devices, barely do anything with their PCs. It's possible to have them function semi happily with a small handful of devices connected, provided they're not stressing the device too hard. Fire up certain games or voice chat apps and it'll crash and burn... However when I was still using it I found online a recommendation to stand them on their side to improve ventillation and turn wi-fi off if you don't need it and that does seem to help the stability. Also I realised where I had it placed got direct sunlight for part of the day which is probably a factor. Yeah it does help a little, though you're usually better off addressing the root cause (sunlight) as you've found ;) Incidentally I call them routers myself and consider it fair as they do incorporate a router, as well as a modem and in many cases a wifi access point. In truth they are a multifunction device but router is the closest to an accurate name without using a long descriptive "router/modem/wi-fi access point" type name. Agreed. |
