1295633 2012-08-20 10:20:00 No I hadn't that's a good deal for those who want to use Telecom. I'd rather not if I can avoid it, had my share of issues with Telecom and don't wish to give them my custom again gary67 (56)
1295634 2012-08-20 10:48:00 Just been given one of these, but it's going back because it keeps on getting no signal, emergency calls only.

You have the i9000 or the i9000T ? Coz one is for 2Degrees / Vodafone and the other for XT. It's quite easy to fix. Standard firmware?

It's 7 weeks old, parents taken it back where their got it from. Once problem orated I will get it back. Yes standard firmware. What's the easy fix? plod (107)
1295636 2012-08-20 20:30:00 If you get the Galaxy S, it's well worth taking the time to flash a custom version of Jellybean on it for him.

Could you possibly link the firmware and instructions? I didn't think the Galaxy S met all the requirements for jellybean. Anyway I'm thinking of trying it, will transfer any critical apps over to my Tablet just in case.

Ah OK. Usually that kind of thing can be fixed by upgrading the radio firmware, it's not too difficult thanks to Odin which Samsung use to flash most of their stuff.

Depends if you've pre-flashed something. If you have, just download, flash the .zip from Recovery and factory reset. Easy :)

It's not difficult, but well worth it!!

1295638 2012-08-21 00:27:00 My Galaxy S is just running stock Vodafone supplied firmware 2.3.3 (XWJVH) so it looks like I have a few hoops to jump through.
Even the official Samsung 2.3.6 sounds quite interesting but vodafone show no signs of offering it so I'll have to follow the guide for that too.

Because I paid full price for my phone over a year ago (around $900) I have been reluctant to muck around with it, but the urge to try one of the newer firmwares has been growing lately. Is Jellybean fully functional now? it seems there were a few features not working on the first version.

As for the OP's question, there are some LG smartphones available for under $200 if you look around. It's a smaller screen and slower processor than a galaxy S but still performs very well for the price and the model I've seen comes with an offline GPS app that costs over $60 to buy and seems a little better than the default navigator app. Several of my workmates got them because most smartphones were too expensive for them and seem pretty happy with it, It all depends on what you want to do with it.

1295639 2012-08-21 00:46:00 Yeah I've had my brother confirm that the camera and USB Mass Storage all works fine. It's fantastic and really gives the phone a new lease on life!!

It's not difficult. Basically the first thing you need is a custom recovery. I wrote a guide a while back (Blog got pwnd and I lost some old images) on getting MIUI (Another custom firmware) onto the Galaxy S. If you follow it roughly, you'll see it's easiest if you flash an 'intermediary' ROM via Odin in order to get a custom Recovery which will *then* allow you to flash Jellybean.

If you get stuck, just make a new thread here and ask. Remember it's *incredibly* hard to actually brick those phones, even if you try intentionally (And I've tried!)
