98133 2002-11-12 18:32:00 Hi
A lot of time when I boot my pc it stalls/freezes after a few seconds into Windows ME. I can see the wallpaper and a few of the icons in the toolbar but the other icons dont appear and the loading up stops. I have to switch the pc off from the main and switch it on back and hope that it boots up well.
Any suggestions what the problem is and what to do about it?
Thanks

98134 2002-11-12 18:58:00 go here
start > run > type msconfig > start up tab > and untick everything you dont need
for a guide to what things do try here (www.pacs-portal.co.uk).

You may have spyware, or something that is just plain stuffed.

if it's ME, and the problem is resent, try doing a system restore.

98135 2002-11-13 01:13:00 I wouldn't do a system restore. I have ME and have dissabled the option. The software is flawed, and when you do a system restore it winds back the clock, unistalls programs, and changes settings back to the way it was, but doesn't get rid of the problem. The problem will just re - occur

How long have you had ME installed? It usually becomes corrupt/messed up after about a year and a format and reinstall is necessary

My better½s machine is cursed with her 15 y/old son who will possibly go to his grave arguing that everything downloaded of the internet is a :^O:^O good well written program that installs and uninstalls cleanly :^O:^O
This therie is tested several times a month.
System restore has been done a couple of times now, the machine could do with full reformat/rebuild, but in essence still runs reiably after over a year, and will get the full reformat when we are ready to build something new (long story)

98137 2002-11-13 07:48:00 voyager13,

I had this problem when I first installed Windows ME - I tried EVERYTHING I could think of (which was a good week or two) before I figured out what it was - I'd installed ME on an old 95 PC, with its old 512k ISA video card. I went out and bought a 4mb PCI video card and viola! the problem disappeared. My video card wasn't powerful enough to handle ME.

98138 2002-11-13 08:16:00 First off all, I wouldn't even call it Windows ME. It's Microsoft's worst operating system ever, if you can call it an operating system.
Anyway your problem...

Do you have things like: Kazaa, Blubster, Download Accelerator, demo warez, ICQ...software like that kills Windows ME. Have you ever pressed CTRL ALT DEL and checked how many programs are running. EG If you download "Kazaa" you will get 2 or more programs that will always run in the background and getting rid of them is nearly impossible. They will waste a lot of resources and even slow down your internet connection.

1. Solution for your problem (100% fixes every problem)
Back up all your important files (MP3's or whatever) on a CD. (If you don't have a CD Writer, it's about time for everyone to get one, $170-$200 for god' sake.
FORMAT YOUR PC and install some other OS something like Windows 2000 or Windows 98 SE much better)

2. Solution (Doesn't guarantee much)
Get yourself some more RAM, uninstall some programs and definitively run Defrag.

3. Solution
I think it's time for you to format your PC!

In the future when you download things like Kazaa, or anything for free which actually costs to buy as a full version, READ what other people think about it!

Inaccurate biased comments like that aren't appreciated in this forum :p

98142 2002-11-13 09:00:00 Well, your post is cool but...
You know it is pretty scary for some people when they hear this "FORMAT/REINSTALL" just a simple as this...you have got to explain it a bit and not talk bout what your 15 year old son does...

No offense just saying...
