98173 2002-11-14 10:22:00 Norton Ghost files are made from Dos. The program, I have "Norton Ghost 2001" fits on a self booting floppy. It makes an compressed Image file of the selected partition, it will also copy hidden partitions.
These files are saved to the hard drive and then can be transferred to CD if you like. In order to fit it on to one CD prepare as follows:-
1] Use "Partition Magic" to reduce the size of the primary partition if there is plenty of free space.
2] Delete the swap file if it is on the primary partition. It can be on any partition.
3] Empty all your Browser cache's & the Rubbish bin, Browser history & Cookies. Empty Temp file folders. & delete any obsolete files.
4] Run Norton Utes (or smilar) & clean up registry.
Windows XP or ME will now fit on to a CD.

If you don't wish to mess about, you can use "File Splitter" (from PC World) to split the Ghost file in two.

To Restore:-
1] Boot with start Floppy.
2] Format the primary partitiion, preferably with "Partition Magic"
3]Run " Norton Ghost" from self booting floppy & restore the Ghost Image to the primary partition.
The sysetem will now be exactly as it was originally.
The whole process takes about 20 minutes.

98174 2002-11-15 09:36:00 I skipped MSDos 4 because of Forums like this.

I used FidoNet at the time ( and still do )

The Internet wasn't around then!! :-)

My main point is that you use YOUR operating system of choice.

I can see that people use computers for various reasons.

If you want to run a word processor, spreadsheet, database and basic comms you could use M/S Works 2 or 3 running under MSDos Ver 5 on a 386 SX/16 computer with 2 Megs RAM.

MSDos 3.3, 5.0, 6.22 were good.

Programs installed in the directory of your choice. ( They still do ) but we didn't have the Registry. We had no Win.ini or System.ini.

We had a Config.sys for memory managment (QEMM) (EMM386) and Autoexec.bat to configure Hardware and start programs etc..

If you want to use Photoshop 7 then you need more hardware.

Last July I turned 60 yrs old. I am currently building computers, driving a truck and back at school doing NZCC levels 2 & 3.

I am the first to admit that I don't know EVERYTHING.

What I NEED to know I have the skills to find out.

I preferred using MSdos 6.22 and MSWorks. For relaxation it was Pacman.. Commander Keen.. MS Flight Simulator ver 1. 0, Zork etc.

I didn't think that Windows 3.1 was worth a tin of fish but I had to learn it to have a job.

I learnt COBOL to get my first computing job. I still have a COBOL compiler and know how to use it. In the last year I have written two COBOL applications.

I guess what I am trying to say is "DON'T STOP LEARNING."

OTOH I don't want to learn how to be a brain surgeon. Nor do I need to do a valve grind on my car. I pay the IHC to cut my lawn for two reasons.

1. I don't have the time.
2. They need the support and they help themselves.

The point I tried to make in my first post was:-

1. Because a person doesn't vote the way YOU do does not make them WRONG.
2. Because a person has a different view of God than YOU do does not make them WRONG.
3. If certain people want to run WinME and it works for them what is the problem?

Think about it!!

98175 2002-11-15 09:45:00 "Everybody knows WinME is not stable."

I would disagree. There are heaps of people that don't have a computer.
So how would they know then?

98176 2002-11-15 09:57:00 You slag WinME.

What do you use?
and why?

Maybe you are writing your OWN O\S which of course you can do using Linux by re-compiling the Kernel.

If you want to answer then we can have a go at you. :-)

A computer is simply a tool which will allow you to do what you want with the right software.

98177 2002-11-17 00:12:00 >>> Windows Me is the worst thing ever designed...

I've seen worse

>>> Mike you know it as well because you hate it too...

Actually, if you check back through my post history, you'll see that actually I prefer ME to other 9x based Windows versions - After XP, ME would have to be my favourite, and the one that caused me the least problems. So before you go telling me what I do or do not like, check out what I've said in the past :)

Mike.
