97928 2002-11-13 00:56:00 yeah...

The fight should go on to save the maori language which is unique, but sadly many NZ's seem to forget or not give a thought...They would rather learn Japanese or German ...Countries which have a worst history than ours ever did...

You won't change peoples attitudes with cyber terrorism. You will catch more files with jam yhan with viniger.

In the grand sceme of things French, German or Japanese languages could help someone with international work or trade far more than Te Reo Maori. It doesn't matter what their histories were, it's purely economics and business.

That is exactly the point, languages are not designed for commercial gain as 'lego' were trying to acheive. Language is the core of the people. Maori don't want to preserve the language for financial gain, it is to preserve the culture. Although I don't condone the action taken against "lego" it does go to show the lengths he was willing to take as obviously in his eyes his 'language' was being ridiculed.

97931 2002-11-13 01:30:00 So, one learns Te Reo Maori for cultural reasons and French, German or
Japanese for economic reasons?

I only learned French at school because the teacher had a ruler which hurt when it came in contact with my knuckles or the back of my legs :_|

Well i find that part the strangest...
Things get rediculus names from all sorts of languages not least of all english. Brand names and trade names are taken from many sources. All this reflects really is that the maori language slipped briefly into the mainstream.

I'm not maori, even though it is often assumed that i am, but i like the word kai, i think it fits better in my language than the english imports of food, dinner, lunch etc.
Now as a non maori am i taking the **** by importing this small peice of maori into my personal common use?

Also what licence do i need?
When i can, i share my kai with a danish/scottish/irish/maori woman. Does this allow licence?

If language is not intended to slip into the mainstream of the society it is used in, then let us rename it a secret code, and allow it to disapear back into obscurity.
