98143 2002-11-13 09:34:00 I am running Windows ME & XP on the same machine & find them both reliable. I do not use system restore, but prefer to make a Ghost Image file of the primary partitions. Much quicker and more reliable than system restore.

I keep ME because some of my Camera & spare parts software doesn't work on XP. I find that ME is faster than XP which would probably benefit from a faster PCU. Mine is only 500mhz AMD k6.

Having done battle with Linux for some time, I appreciate Micro Soft OS.
I found Windows 98 to be the most unstable.

98144 2002-11-13 09:52:00 I upgraded from 98 to ME, to gain the benefits of stability.

It ran fine. On 3 different platforms, each ran quite stable and very fast.
While none are as stable as XP, ME was quite good.

So "yeah" if you want to slag something, then please give us the technical reasons why its no good, because I am afraid just your personal opinion is not a good reason to change the OS.

I have used every version of Windows (including the first "runtime" versions), I have maintained them, been an IT Manager of a large company... I assume you have similar experience, to be able to offer such wisdom?

98146 2002-11-13 10:06:00 yeah..
the point i was making was the ME has withstood the insationable meddling of a 15year old, and is still stable... **** everywhere, but stable.

The need for formatting is based on the need for a tidy up what is fast getting to be a big enough mess to justify a bulldozer through the HDD, and the desire to give the young fella a clean drive without his mothers stuff on it. ME remains stable. that is the point..... i think you missed it.

BTW, i prefer 98SE, but only because i am running 2 very lo tech machines

98147 2002-11-13 10:06:00 Wow...!
Well I don't really want to get started on my personal skills like "Mr IT" (i know it all), I'm just expressing my opinion. I have had bad experiences with a ME and some of my colleagues have aswell. Especially IT Managers don't recommend ME at all and I don't want to start telling you the list of Bugs that Me has especially for gamers and internet developers... i don't know what's wrong with Mr Al Pacino here.

PS: Fact: When Bill Gates presented Windows ME personally, it crashed (Blue Screen Error in VxD) in front of the audience...

98149 2002-11-13 10:15:00 From a news archive...

At the Comdex trade show, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates encountered the blue screen during a demonstration of Windows 98

You were saying??

And I would not recommend ME for a corporate environment. Nor 98.
For reasons of security. These are home PC OS.

98150 2002-11-13 10:26:00 Are we getting into an Operating System war here?

I would prefer we don't.

I have used CPM, MSDos 3.3 (skipped 4.0) MSDos 5.0, 6.0, 6.22

Windows 3.0, 3.1, 3.11 95, 98, 98osr2,NT4, 98SE ME, XP.

Currently dual booting WinXP and RedHat 7.3

WinXP Pro is MY operating system of choice

It's the old story isn't it? Some people like Fords and others like Holdens.
Some people are Muslims and others aren't.
Some people go to KFC and others go to McDonalds

*I* just use what works for me and Family.

98151 2002-11-13 10:35:00 Hi Elephant

Good to see a well travelled OS user.
For the record, I dont even use ME, I use XP and agree it is excellent.
I run it on 4 PCs here.

I can sympathise with skipping DOS 4, my fling was brief as well.

I can add VersaDos to the list (Motorola 6800 series OS)

I guess my concern above is that telling someone to change to an earlier OS isn't really helping the person...

98152 2002-11-13 10:37:00 Just one thing though...

When you have a Family and ONE PC surely a SECURE Operating system is good?

I remember a person using Win95 getting into Dad's' business stuff and deleting files.

With Win95 all you had to do was to press Esc when asked for password.

If you used a different shell in Win95 the children could not get into the O/S.
