97781 2002-11-11 06:24:00 Some time ago in NZ PC world there was a tip on making networks a little more secure in Windows XP pro.
The setting required any other pc needing to provide a password to access the shared files.

I thought this was a good idea at the time but now want to remove this setting, but for the life of me I can not remember where this setting is.

When I try to connect to my XP machine from another pc I get a message
You must supply a password to make this connection.
Resource \\pcmane\IPC$
Password

I have checked with the XP Newsgroups but all they have come up with is to ensure the Guest a/c is enabled, to make sure there is an account on the XP machine with the same user name or to check the permissions on the shared folder.

Needless to say everything there checks out ok.

Could someone please let me know how to remove this need for a password.

Thanks.

97782 2002-11-11 09:37:00 This is how W2K works and I think XP Pro is the same. Right-Click on the drive icon that is shared [has a hand under the icon] in windows explorer then select the sharing tab, click 'do not share this drive'. Theoretically that has removed all permissions. Now click on the 'Share this drive' and in the settings check to see who has permissions. You will need to ensure that permissions are set to 'everyone' if that doesn't work try 'Guest' remember that the group/user with the least of permissions has precedence.
Hope this is of help
