98269 2002-11-13 02:13:00 Knoppix has detected my Modem. I couldn't use the Wizard for my ISP.
I get the following Error message:
ERROR KPPP
Timeout expired while waiting for the PPP interface to come up.
Details
Cannot open any of the following logfiles:
/var/log/system.ppp
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/messages
"Kppp's diagnosis can't help"

Can anyone steer me in the right direction please.

98270 2002-11-13 09:32:00 Are you sure its got your modem? I have RedHat 7.2 on the last 3GB of my drive, it says it has detected a modem, but I know it hasn't actually detected anything. So I prefer to use winXP as I can access the Internet (I really don't want to say this) better than Linux can. I must get around to looking for a driver for my modem so I can enjoy the stability of Linux. raddersnz (684)

98273 2002-11-13 22:55:00 Thanks for all your help. It looks as tho I need an external Modem so you have saved me at lot of wasted time. It is a pity but at least Knoppix has shown me what Linux has to offer.

98274 2002-11-14 01:23:00 A full Linux has modules available for a number of internal modems. Check at www.linmodems.org/ . "Everyone" prefers external modemsm because they work. :D Graham L (2)
98275 2002-11-14 03:25:00 But my internal one works fine (with windows):D raddersnz (684)
98276 2002-11-14 03:28:00 That's because an internal one needs tricks to work with a kernel which is designed to be secure. Windows is not meant to be secure. Internal modems were built to work with Windows and to be cheap. You get waht you pay for. Sometimes. Graham L (2)
98277 2002-11-14 03:46:00 I realise that, and if I had the money I could afford a free OS:D

98278 2002-11-14 08:42:00 Hi Pato,
Sorry about the bad link. I had it in my "Watches" and it works fine for me.

Anyhow you DON't need an external modem. As long as you have a hardware modem you should be able to connect. I actually emailed the Knoppix site about this and got a reply about it.

I've done a copy and paste from the original to give you some idea how to do it; it should work on most ISP's if not try CHAP\PAP.

In case anyone wants to use Knoppix on the net here is what I eventually did. Mind you bear in mind this is my experience using Paradise, other ISP's may be different
Hit the big "K" on the left hand side, run the mouse up to Internet and then out to KPPP internet dailup tool, from there setup-new-dialog setup(NOT WIZARD) Fill in connection name (anything you like) ADD the phone number and in the case of Paradise change the authentication to PAP(other ISP's may be different) after that go to DNS and put in your ISP"s web address (paradise.net.nz) and thats it ! When you back out you'l be asked your user name and password.
Click on connect and you should be there.
Go back to the big "K" and internet and find a browser. I found Mozilla good Konquerer was a bit unstable, (I probably had to set it up somehow)

Happy Linux browsing!!
